Interesting that there are no French riders in the womens final at all when they are dominant on the mens side for years already.

French cycling (all disciplines) was/is very male dominated. IIRC, the federation had until a few years ago one registered female cyclist for each 20 male ones...

That's should be Olympic quota for Germany in women's event. Sadly.

What's the problem with that?

I remember Jeannie Longo being Double French Champion for year after year, well into her 50s, because there just weren’t any good young riders.

It's not every day that you see a grand mother winning a non-master national championship

Jeannie Longo, la abuela del ciclismo gana con 52 años - AS.com

She was 52 for her 58 (!!!!!!!) and last national tittle in 2011 (TT) with a young Audrey Cordon on her left.

Cycling has a long history of being male centric and male dominated going back to its competitive roots. When you consider only this year of our lord 2023 have the three grand tours all have women's races - and none of those 'grand tour' in nature, that two of the Monuments still don't have a women's race, and Paris Roubaix femmes is still very new (and brilliant, as it happens). And since France, Belgium and Italy are the roots of modern competitive cycling, at least on the road, you expect that to be reflected. The singular exception always seems to have been the dutch - reflected in their current dominance.

i was stunned to think yesterday was the first time a Belgian had won a women's world road race for fifty years

Not that Ireland is wildly better, it has to be said, Rás an mBan and all. GB, Australia and North America seem to have a solid base of women riders going back some years, but none of these were a road cycling heartland historically either.

Italy has been super strong in women's cycling for a good while, to be fair. There was always some Italian or another to beat Marianne Vos to her 520th consecutive silver :p

Which quota are you refering to? In BMX racing?

But only if the current ranking persists, i.e. Japan and Canada remain on their places 9 and 10 in the Olympic ranking.

If Brazil (currently on t11th place) overtakes one of them, the quota will switch.
