Zonderland and Van Vleuten feel like the most obvious choices to me too. But what about Kromowidjojo? Another icon of TeamNL for the past decade in her probably last games.

Problem of Zonderland and Van Vleuten: they will compete in the first weekend, so won't be allowed to participate in the Opening Ceremony. Henk Grol is a good choice too!!

Although with Grol's luck in his career, he'll probably dislocate his shoulder waving the flag or something.

Anita Włodarczyk (Athletics) - two olympic golds,4 times world champion, 4th (and prolly last) olympics, world record holder, absolute legend of hammer throw

Michał Kubiak (Volleyball) - captain of volleyball team, two times world champion, 3rd olympics, controversial yet popular

Łukasz Kubot (Tennis) - one of the top doubles players, 2 time grand slam winner, tho has no good olympic history

Piotr Małachowski (Athletics) - discus throw legend, two olympic silver medals, world champion and two times silver medalist, just a lovely person

I am unashamed, at getting nothing done.

For :wIND:   :

This could be a difficult choice actually. Most of big favourites for medal have their events the day after opening ceremony. By form Apurvi Chandela, Saurabh Chaudhary, Mirabhai Chanu all seem to be placed well but competing next day doesn't help the cause.

Even badminton starts the next day to opening. In such a case a boxer or wrestler may get the chance. For boxing Amith /  Mary Kom, the latter with experience has the edge provided she qualifies. . Else Bajrang  or Vinesh (wrestling, subject to qualification) . Neeraj Chopra (athletics), Manu Bhaker (shooting)  all have a outside chance.

Official announcement for :ROU

Simona Halep will carry their flag in Tokyo

This was announced by the President of the Romanian Olympic Committee,

Honest question (and this doesn't necessarily pertain to Halep), but do you think we could see some participation in the tennis tournament diminished since its all the way in Japan and right at the start of North American hard court season?

It has to be Danuta Kozák for us (Hungary) if she will be available. She's the only female athlete to win K1, K2 and K4 at the same Olympics in Canoe Sprint, has 5 Olympic gold medals and she only needs to win one more to "beat" Krisztina Egerszegi, and become the most successful Hungarian female athlete of all time. Katinka Hosszú is more well-known and an obvious choice for us, but I am pretty sure about that she's will skip the OC, she will have a 400m IM heat the next morning.

Japan's a big market so I think we might see some pressure from sponsors to make sure the big players go to Tokyo.

Same thing in golf too.
