Fencing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

I don't think that Canada really needed this undeserved "free" place with weak squad, it would be not fair at all

Look, on one hand I do agree with you that Canada’s women’s epee team is weaker than (probably even a level down) Ukraine or Estonia and it’s probably better for the sport of fencing that a team of their caliber will be at the Olympics. On the other hand,  how would them qualifying be undeserved? It’s not like Canada cheated or anything, and they also had to put up results to be 12th in the Olympic Ranking.

First of all, where is your leader Xiao Ruien? With her Canadian team would be much stronger and more competitive.

Secondly, be honest: did your girls really fight against USA knowing that the only result for them to be at the Olympics is to lose to USA? Absolutely not, they lost by a biggest margin in the R16 amongst all of the teams.

Ukraine was in exactly the same situation, because we need to lose to Poland to qualify them at the Olympics and lower the chances of USA. And guess what? We ain't playing dirty and won, moving onto semifinals with idea that only victory at this WC stage can be for us suitable (not knowing the result of Italy vs USA).

So this is thee difference and in case of both Estonia and Ukraine we would qualify by our own effort and not by the help of other, especially without losing to them on purpose.

Great question, I’m not sure. :d

Well… no. But to be honest they were probably going to get crushed anyways :p

When Leonora MacKinnon is your best fencer, and you’ve never heard of the other two you already know you’ll be in some serious trouble.

In the likely case of :GER not qualifying as a team in men's sabre: Is Szabo in the individual competition definitely qualified or is there still a possibility for him not getting the quota place?

    • Juniors were there recently and the track was awful   Although that's not necessarily bad. Tracks don't all need to be fast, a slow track (like the horribly slow one in Poland) simply favors a different style of athletes. Training a lot there doesn't really give much extra advantage though, not like in sliding sports where of course as host country you make sure your athletes know every single meter a year before the Olympics.    And to get back on topic: speed skater Elisa Dul broke her tibia and fibula in a training fall yesterday and will obviously be out of the OQT and so the Olympics.
    • The PSL race in Davos was (yet another) insult to a beautiful discipline. The red course (which was actually yellow) had several holes and an exposed ice sheet, which made the athletes slide way too long, causing DNFs or massive time losses. The only positive note is that Caffont won despite racing on the more dangerous course in the final

    • Not just Erin Jackson, but several others like for instance Joep Wennemars. Think of it what you may, it’s all down to the way the rules are written up. The rationale is probably to prevent that a rider that falls is automatically relegated to the B group.
