for how long must he be quarantined ?

He seems unsure about it. But he did say that "staying in quarantine for 7 days would seriously reduce his chances of competing". They are trying everything to stop this quarantine, though...

But just the fact that something like 100 (negative) athletes could feasibly miss the Olympics due to one positive test on their flight is eerie... And even then, different rules apply to different teams, apparently.

This must be a bad joke...

A full week after arriving to Japan, our canoeist Matija Marinić ended up in quarantine today (not allowed to train on the rapids) because some person from his flight tested positive... And that's despite Marinić testing negative every day since arriving in Japan.

There were canoeists from other nations on that flight as well, but apparently not all of them were ordered a quarantine...

If this is how it works, then just cancel the Games ffs ! :yikes::hairpull:

Bugger, this really sucks!! Just the beginning (even before the Games) and already such a mess.

I hope they will put that in line .... Cause I guess these decisions will not be only on Japanese government but also on IOC or am I wrong?

It is nonsense that the protocols were made in November and December 2020. During the second wave. But since then, the behavior of athletes has changed completely, a million different competitions held under completely different rules. And now they are returning to the rules almost 9 months ago. Nonsense. Especially since most athletes are vaccinated,

So unusual to see our NOC actually doing something.

The NOC president Mateša was loud and called the organizers "incompetent". They have asked the IOC to resolve this as soon as possible.

Marinić is vaccinated. He has been tested for the last 10 days (including all 8 days since arriving to Japan) and was negative every time.

And now he will lose two training days minimum (best case scenario). Game over.

Oh, and the decision who to quarantine was based on their "proximity" to the positive person (according to their ticket numbers). Marinić and his coach reportedly did not sit at their specified places, though, as the flight (from Istanbul) was not full.

It's clear that IOC and the Japanese didn't think about just how bad things can get with the current COVID protocols. Or they don't care anymore.

We are on the brink of potentially witnessing the worst Olympic Games ever, this isn't in the hands of IOC or anyone at this point, it's up to pure luck how it will all turn out.

Japan population don’t want the games - this is just them trying not possibly see civil disobedience occur becuase of them.

Swapping seats has caused problems in quarantine before. People should know that.

The organizers quarantined them by their assigned seat numbers so changing seats did not cause any problem here. In fact, had they not swapped seats, they would have actually been in the "proximity" and potentially positive now (although sill very unlikely).

What matters is that all this daily testing is done improperly, when some "iffy" circumstance (at best) can override days of negative tests.

And all this in an arguably most quarantine-friendly sport to begin with. One athlete competing at a time on an ever-changing, liquid venue.

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
    • The next chapter in the Krasnobaeva saga is upon us.   Looks like  Armenia have cut ties with her after only a few weeks. A person from their Federation has said, that they won't continue the relationship, because of her unprofessional and rude attitude towards the coaches and other officials. That includes: - having no respect to the coaches and their advise; - training without any motivation; - stops doing the routine and throws objects without any reason; - just lays on the floor and ignores the music.   When this was escalated with her mother, she mentioned that "Elvira has a strong temper and she was the same in Bulgaria and they tolerated her". Which of course is complete BS. If anyone attempted this shit here, they would be thrown out immediately.   And now  are wanting from her mother to return all finances they gave them, which she is refusing, so they will probably sue them. They will also inform other RG Federations about this situation, so they don't hire them.   My 2 cents on this is most likely Krasnobaeva was happy in BG and was forced out by her mother, so now she is sabotaging the move and be done with it.
    • Honestly Ruka is my favourite World Cup event of the whole season. Everybody is there. Later on there is always someone who skips one weekend or another . Not everybody takes part in Tour de ski. But here everyone shows up.
