  1. Great recovery from the Chinese team overall after they lost the first gold to Japan. In the end, the Japanese couldn't challenge them more. Especially on the women's side they remain untouchable. Very enjoyable matches from the Chinese but table tennis is my favourite sport after all.
  2. Unless Yépez/Namuuntsetseg can do something about it. This is probably her last Olympics, right?

After Day 13 Rio: 242/306 events, 81 NOCs with medals After Day 13 Tokyo: 269/339 events, 88 NOCs with medals 88 NOCs have won medals which is not only more in than 2016 in Rio but also a new record that was previously achieved at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Additionally, there have been 63 different NOCs with at least one gold medal. Burkina Faso won their first Olympic medal thanks to triple jumper Hugues Fabrice Zango. The battle between the US and China for most golds is still on and will likely go full distance. The Americans are catching up with twice as many golds won than the Chinese today. Both will have their chances left for the upcoming days. Australia has had another fabulous days with 2 more golds and a silver. If things go well, they might finish ahead of the Britons at the end of the games. Meanwhile, the Russians are likely to finish 4th with their chances left in rhythmic gymnastics, artistic swimming, boxing and wrestling. Canada (4-3-11 in Rio) are set on improving on their ranking in the medal table. They could finish Top 15, which was last achieved 1992 in Barcelona (7-4-7; 11th postion overall back then). Argentina not as successful as five years ago (3-1-0 in Rio), the Kazakh team (3-5-7 in Rio) dropping hard and also the Kenyans (4-4-0 in Rio) can't be satisfied. 4th place counter* (29) (17) (16) (14) (13) (12) (11) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage

Many big and mid-big medalling countries and lots of European-heavy sports while Asia has and then a huge gap and it's mostly just about the US for the Americas. Other need to step up a bit although the overall quality in Europe is quite high.

The race for the crown will be interesting between them in the last 5 days. Japan (7-4-18 in Rio) are looking solid for 3rd with likely no chance for the Russians (12-12-14 in Rio) to catch up. New Zealand (3-6-1 in Rio) on their way making it a splendid games. Lisa Carrington, among others, made sure to improve on the London (finished 6-2-5) and Rio (finished 4-9-5). Should they win two more golds, it'd also equal the most amount of golds the Kiwis had won in one Olympics (8-1-2 in LA 1984). Hungary now trying to edge back to Rio (6-3-4 after Day 11) in canoeing and wrestling while against the odds of many, the Cubans could even follow up the last two Olympics with 5 golds each or more. As of yet, Brazilians have won more medals than in 2016 (3-4-4).   18. There is still much to come for the Dutch but from now on pretty much everything has to work to shift it around.
  19. True, it was surprising to see Cargnin win a bronze. As for skateboarding, street went better than the recent world champs and you still have men's park to come.
