  1. Just some random language fact: Benfeito sounds like "bem feito" in Portuguese. It can both mean "well done" or "serves you right". So, whenever Meaghan Benfeito appears, I immediately think about Meaghan Servesyouright. Talking about terrible sounding Canadian names, beach volleyball player Melissa Humana-Paredes also comes to mind. Humana is human in Portuguese and Paredes is Walls. It's like I see her as a human wall or something whenever she appears. At least in volleyball being a wall is kind of neat when blocking.
  2. I'm not holding my breath for a medal for Aruba at this point. What's going on?
  3. Canada, Brazil and Mexico have had good performances, but Argentina is the most surprising nation here, in my opinion. Last year Argentina struggled against Venezuela on the medal table for the South American Games, so the fact that Argentina stays ahead of Cuba and very close to Colombia right now is a sight to behold.
  4. Nice recovery from Canada in this final day of gymnastics competition. as expected finishes first in the combined medal table in gymnastics (8-11-6), is second (5-5-6) and a close third (5-5-4). and also earned medals. Some results today were very surprising, with a good variety among medalists in individual rhythmic gymnastics (both gymnasts from Canada, the US and Brazil got individual medals in the end).
  5. Yep. Cuba is the only country to always win at least one medal in rhythmic gymnastics since 1987. Brazil is the only country to earn medals in every single group event in every single edition of the Pan Ams. Canada was a major disappointment here.
  6. Canada... So, Cuba will get a medal. What a crazy final!
  7. Mexico has a more difficult routine than Brazil, so I'm surprised Brazil will get gold here! Wow!
  8. Brazil hit their routine! Yes!!!
  9. Complete disaster for the US group in rhythmic gymnastics.
  10. Yes! She deserved a medal so much! I'm really happy she got one here. 5 different medalists today, very interesting.
  11. Karla Diaz will get a medal. @mrv86
  12. Is the next race in men's windsurfing going to be the medal race? Aruba is in a bad position there, unfortunately.
  13. First gold medal ever for Colombia! And Puerto Rico came so close to get their first-ever medal. Bummer.
  14. Handball is a "woman's sport" in Brazil, so the fact that we have a somewhat decent men's team, even with this defeat, is reason enough to celebrate. Still, I suspected this team would not be able to beat Argentina in the final, but they lost even before that.
  15. Brazil took another bronze medal in rhythmic gymnastics, this time after an inquiry. Without the inquiry, Cuba would have outscored Brazil and taken the bronze medal instead. This is definitely not what I expected from this Brazilian group. Mistakes after mistakes, scores way below their potential...
  16. Same apparatus choice for this year: 5 balls / 2 pairs of clubs + 3 hoops.
  17. I used to hate it but now it sounds okay-ish. Not that bad once you're used to it. What I don't like, at all, is mixing religion and sport, and for this I hate the song choice. 5 ribbons is a disaster 70% of the time. Even some other apparatus + ribbon usually end up in disaster quite often.
  18. Poor Fainberg was robbed of a medal. Unbelievable.
  19. I thought she had retired. Nice to know she's still active (and hopefully she's looking to qualify for the Olympics). About rhythmics, I am worried about the group event. Cuba took fourth, which is surprising considering the Canadians have had more international exposure and probably much better coaches. I thought that after the mistake Brazil had, Canada would take bronze, but this was not the case. I hope this is just a period where girls are adjusting to harder routines. It would be fantastic to have Brazil, Mexico, Canada and the US on the same level at the World Championships plus Cuba hopefully doing well. But Mexico seems to be too dominant.
  20. And in some sports, even when they send their best athletes, they are beaten by other nations. Case in point: artistic gymnastics and diving. Both Canada and the US sent some of their best athletes and were beaten by Brazil both in gold and overall number of medals in artistic gymnastics (the US tied in overall medals with Brazil, actually) and, so far, by Mexico in diving (Mexico has more gold medals AND overall medals in diving than any other nation). Let's stop pretending the rest of the continent can't keep up and the competition is hopeless, please.
  21. Peru's goal is to earn at least 10 gold medals, right? Is this feasible?
  22. And the US has 46. My point when replying to @Olympian1010 is that Canada is much closer to Colombia, Argentina and Brazil than the US. Not even close to US by a mile.
  23. We haven't had much going on, to be honest. This is a huge problem with this edition, of course. The highlight of the event so far has been the gymnastics events. Canada sent the best of the best in every event, so no B teams here. And, quite honestly, except for the women's artistic team, I don't think Canada looks too hot. Men's artistic was okay considering no one expected anything from them, rhythmic has been a disaster so far and in men's trampoline your best gymnast didn't even qualify for a final. The second best event for Canada so far is diving, and also no B teams here. No wonder you are doing better than expected.
  24. Yes, I agree that if Canada cared more, they would make the battle for second place a lot more interesting, but never in a million years I would say that there would be no competition. Don't forget that in 2015 Canada had a huge boost as the host. I mean, just look at how Peru is performing here compared to how they perform at the other editions. Second: no one cares about overall medals. Only recently the US began to care about it because China beat them in gold medals at the Olympics. We all know that gold medals are what matters when it comes to the medal table, and I don't see Canada earning that many, either at the Summer Olympics or even at this edition of the Pan Ams.
  25. This is their third medal at this Games. Well done for them.
