  1. Interesting choice using a male in the freestyle portion, though given our choice of swimmers it was either that or snub Masse.
  2. More of a B+ team since the men will likely swim later tonight.
  3. Personally I don't think there should be continental quotas for events with less than 12 entrants. Women's water polo sort of avoids the issue because South Africa declines the quota and Australia and China are good enough so that no one complains, outside of them getting a free spot. Women's team synchronized swimming doesn't hold too well as both Australia and Egypt are significantly weaker and if the host nation is also weak then you essentially have 5 nation competing for 3 medals.
  4. Yeah the women's tournament has potentially 10 teams which could fight for a medal in any given tournament, it's one of the reasons why I wanted 12 (or at least 10) teams at the Olympics. Congrats to Canada, we're finally on the right side of an important narrow match
  5. There are women e-sporters (is that a word?) though clearly not as many as men and many of them play in women only tournaments and make about 10% of what the men make, though you could say the same for a lot of other sports .
  6. Our next qualification tournament has just concluded. The African Continental Table Tennis Qualifiers have decided their quotas. Boys - Girls - Congrats to everyone. Link.
  7. The 50km was always in danger of being removed. Making the 20km event into a 21.1km event seems arbitrary. I hate that the IOC is trying to get rid of endurance events or never brought them in the first place. Is four hours of walking any different than four hours of a single round of golf or the entire time it takes for a weightlifting competition in a single weightclass?
  8. So close for Canada to get three quotas (and max quotas overall). I'm so excited about our figure skating team, one of the best in the world right now.
  9. That won't go anywhere, unless there's a big push by the RFA/UFA pool to add an Olympics participation clause which I doubt will happen.
  10. There's not much in terms of qualification. The final biathlon event is this weekend so the nation rankings will be finalized. The men’s, women’s and mixed curling world championships occur between now and the end of April. The other big event is the figure skating world championships which will determine most of the quotas in that sport. After that the next big date is in September. Overall four threads would need to be opened.
  11. Honestly until I hear differently I'm going to assume NHL players will not be at the Olympics. I'm already looking at Europe and lower level NA leagues to fill our roster.
  12. Thanks to the Portuguese Olympic Committee here are the qualification documents for the 28 sports. Now all we need is the three newly added sports (break dancing, karate and sport climbing). The first qualification events will begin in April.
  13. They can only play with 9 players? In a sport like ice hockey that's impossible. That's like asking a single person to run a relay.
  14. Better than a Pan American Winter Games assuming Canada and US send their best teams. Though I guess a number of nations could win bronze in team events. They should have let Australia and New Zealand be eligible for medals, at least it would have added more competition.
  15. I agree, the depth in ice hockey low so, when you have Championship tier nations playing against a Division III nation you end up with a blowout. France will also easily win by double digits. It'll be the same thing with the South Korean women's team at the Olympics. At least the men's team may avoid getting completely stomped in all of their matches.
  16. According to the main site 644 athletes from 34 nations will be competing. Russia and hosts Turkey will send 75 and 69 athletes respectively while Sweden will send a lone figure skater.
  17. The main site stole the ice hockey schedule from the Winter Universiade so it looks like Canada, China, Kazakhstan and the United States are competing. Still waiting for a participating nations list on the main site. Click on game day details
  18. Won't they compete as neutral athletes? Also the news is not surprising, they have been dragging their heels throughout the entire time.
  19. As a hockey nation China's men's team is weak. They're a division II team (playing in the B group in 2017). Meanwhile Kazakhstan spends its time bouncing between division I and the championship group. Obviously both nations aren't sending their best players, but Kazakhstan would have to send a very weak team (which would be weird considering they are hosts) for China not to get crushed.
  20. The Caribbean Football Union is considering to split from CONCACAF http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1046180/caribbean-football-union-considering-split-from-concacaf
  21. I’m pretty sure the teams are here through invitation. College teams are also a bit different so using the world ranking is a bit unfair. At the last Winter Universidad the US women’s team failed to reach the semi-final. An unthinkable feat had it been their true team.
  22. The US wanted to rig the groups so they could go against Canada in an outdoor game. So instead of using the more logical option of switching Canada with Sweden they placed the 1st and 2nd placed teams with teams placed 8th, 9th and the promoted team while teams ranked 3rd-7th were placed in the other group. Using the old standard the groups should have been... Group A: Group B:
  23. The IIHF likes to make money and Canada loves the tournament. If they could they would have the tournament in Canada every year. Last time it was in Buffalo Canada "invaded" the United States.
