  1. At the half way point Asia and Europe are tied 15-15 in terms of athlete quotas. Oceania (Australia) has the other two.
  2. It's pretty sad the state rugby in Canada is in. Sadly the article is correct, most of the money comes from 15s and the federation needs to do everything to keep that program alive, even if it means sacrificing the 7s in the short term.
  3. They'll be reallocated to the nation with the highest MQS in that event which has not yet qualified any shooting quotas
  4. Haha, that's how I feel about this World Championship too, wanting the United States to do as well as possible so we can at least qualify someone to the Olympics later. At least for Asia you'll have other World events for which Asian nations can qualify. For us our first continental event begins at the end of October, before any World Cup events. Though I guess the ISSF compensated that by giving our continent more quotas than we deserve.
  5. Yeah, Indonesia did well even if you remove extra events. 35 medals across Olympic events and 18 more in non-Olympic events that also appeared in 2014 is an amazing performance for the nation. It would have been their best performance since they last hosted the event in 1962, though fewer gold medals than in 1974.
  6. Sorry about that... Here is the top 10 nations, only taking Olympic events into consideration. Top 10 (G-S-B) 1. 106 - 70 - 54 2. 64 - 50 - 66 3. 33 - 43 - 49 4. 14 - 18 - 16 5. 14 - 18 - 14 6. 13 - 10 - 16 7. 12 - 7 - 7 8. 11 - 10 - 13 9. 10 - 17 - 32 10. 8 - 13 - 12
  7. There's still one more event to go, but here is some initial stats on the performance of nations in non-Olympic events. First I removed all non-Olympic sports, except for roller sports, which I only kept skateboarding. I also removed events from Olympic sports that are not in the Olympics with the following exceptions. In boxing, weightlifting and wrestling all weightclasses were kept and in karate the men's and women’s +84kg and +68kg respectively were kept to simulate the +75kg and +61kg events. Medals won in non-Olympic Events 1. - 63 2. - 59 3. - 52 4. - 34 5. - 32 6. - 25 7. - 24 8. - 23 8. - 23 8. - 23 11. - 22 Everyone else won fewer than 20 medals in non-Olympic events. Not too surprising that Indonesia won the most medals. Bahrain, Iraq and Syria were the only nations to have won medals, but none in non-Olympic events. Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Nepal only won medals in non-Olympic events. Of course putting down total medals is a bit unfair for larger nations. Powerhouses like China are expected to do well in all sports so it's expected that they would also win more medals in non-Olympic sports. Here I calculated the probability that a nation would have earned their number of Olympic event medals (or fewer) over the total medals won. A lower number meant it was unlikely and that the nation likely benefited from non-Olympic events. 1. 0.0000000076% 2. 0.0049% 3. 0.0087% 4. 0.049% 5. 0.12% 6. 0.35% 7. 0.84% 8. 2.46% 9. 3.34% 10. 4.39% Everyone else was at a 10% chance or higher. 8/10 nations that benefited from non-Olympic events were Southeast Asian nations, likely due to Indonesia's influence. The nations that saw significantly little to no benefit from the added events were Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Japan, China, North Korea, Qatar and Kazakhstan.
  8. Yes, it essentially means the 10th ranked team (assuming Argentina wins the Pan American quota), currently Ireland will be a seeded team and whoever among the unseeded team (currently, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan and South Korea) gets that match-up will fancy their chances.
  9. Too bad it'll be the 1st vs. 14th rank team, the top team would have to lose on purpose for the upset to occur. It would be funny if Austria's men or Czech Republic's women qualified though.
  10. Assuming they deny the quota in time I imagine they would still qualify for the final play-offs (at the very least by being one of the highest ranked non-qualified nations). The FIH has been accommodating to them over the past couple of Olympics.
  11. Yeah the qualification documents can get quite confusing, especially when some of them may have been prepared by a non-native English speaker. I think it boils down to continental quotas can be reallocated to another nation from the same continent should they be in the top 20 (to prevent a weak African or Oceania team from qualifying) while all other reallocations just go to the highest ranked non-qualified teams from the intercontinental tournaments. Does anyone know if South Africa will have the same policy of denying any continental quota won?
  12. I see it as the quota will be reallocated as below, as in how quotas that were won in Olympic Qualification Events will be reallocated.
  13. The 8th quota would just go to the highest ranked non-qualified nation, there won't be 8 play-off matches.
  14. Huge penalty corner from Japan
  15. It's the best result from individual races, Malaysia won 4 vs. Singapore's 3
  16. It's not so much that I know a lot of field hockey, just that realistically speaking there's about 17 nations fighting for 12 spots in both genders and even then that could be generous.
  17. Pakistan's best hope would be for Japan to win and then hope for them to draw Ireland (or Canada, depending on the World Rankings at the time) in the intercontinental qualifiers. They must also hope that Argentina wins the Pan American quota, if not, their easiest opponent will then be New Zealand or Spain.
  18. Malaysia would be the favourite over Japan, but so were South Korea and Pakistan (if Japan holds)
  19. Big upset, might be for the best in terms of maximizing Asian representation. India will likely be one of the top 3 seeds in the world qualifiers.
  20. Roller sports doesn't need too many quotas to work. 12-16 athletes per event plus it likely needs to be an outdoor venue in order to save costs.
  21. Fortnite came out last year and is ranked 11th in worldwide prize pools, if things continue it'd be one of the top games by next year. There's also the issue of companies releasing sequels before the Olympics, how would they handle a Dota 3 or League of Legends 2? If they are successful there may not be too many high level people playing the prequels. Yeah, six years is practically a generation in gaming, at least with two years you have a general idea of what's coming out.
  22. I imagine motorsports would be like sailing where everyone uses the same car/bike. As for esports another issue it faces is the ever changing landscape of games played, especially among sport games which sees releases every year. What's popular also changes quite rapidly which makes it challenging to pick which games will be featured at least two years in advance.
  23. It won't be the end of the world if Japan wins. India/China/South Korea are all capable of qualifying through the world qualifiers, though the matches will be difficult with opponents as Ireland, United States, Belgium or even each other being very possible
  24. I was a bit surprised by that. India has looked the best as expected, but I'm impressed by Pakistan. It would be huge for them to qualify here, especially after they missed out in 2016.
  25. Not too surprising, on paper they were the best eligible athletes on the field. Still Singapore and Thailand are holding strong and barring a large disaster this may come down to the medal race.
