  3. Not quite sure if this new sport deserves a new thread or indeed a whole forum... Anyway, this weekend sees the inaugural UCI Gravel World Championships from Italy. Quite a lot of the dual road/mountain-bike big names involved, including the Notorious vdP, Sagan, Stybar, Fernand-Prevot, but there's also a lot of discipline specialists from the Americas where Gravel Racing has a commercial circuit of its own. 13. And also because of the pluperfect subjunctive.
  14. They don't need many of them to work!
  15. That's not right - dymovaya truba in English would be chimney, (ie smoke tube) not fireplace. Fireplace is камин or очаг (very old-fashioned kind)
  16. Bah! Let them start off playing Luxembourg & Fiji!
  17. British Taekwando Medallist Lutallo Muhammed. Bronze in London, Silver in Rio. Came within literally one second of gold in Rio, but conceded a buzzer-beating head shot when all he needed to do was take one step backwards out of the ring and give away the penalty point. Great Britain's double Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad retires - BBC Sport
  18. A brilliant discovery for fans of classical history. This plant was the wonder drug of the ancient world, but it’s been lost for about 2000 years. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-11250821/Miracle-plant-used-ancient-Greeks-rediscovered-thought-gone-extinct.html
  19. French Under-18s effortlessly out-crazy Matthieu van der Poel. France's under-18 international against Poland had to be abandoned after the ill-disciplined French side was reduced to just seven men. The referee took the players off the pitch 13 minutes from time after Darnell Bile, 16, headbutted an opponent after scything him down with a brutal tackle to become the fourth French player to see red. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11249675/France-18-game-ABANDONED-FOUR-players-sent-off.html

  22. Same thing happened to her as happens to all the British female riders. They get signed up to a big team & end up as domestiques for van Vleuten, Vos, Vollering (and that’s just the Vs) or other big names.
  23. It's a strange thing: people always call the Khmer Rouge a "mad experiment", yet they were carrying out a perfectly orthodox Marxist programme - their agrarian policies taken word for word from the 1848 Communist Manifesto, written by Marx himself. For some reason, Marxists get angry whenever anyone points this out.
  24. 2 outs, 2 men on base…. Ground ball to first! Wow!
  25. Tahiti do have a velodrome, albeit one of the old Roubaix-style ones. But looking at the names, a few Togolese canoeists in there. Well done - they were a strong team by any standards, would have been contenders.
