It's a national qualification event for Germany, maybe for other countries as well?

If Germany qualifies as a Team, the best german female and male competitor in Tokyo will be nominated for the Olympics, if they finish in the top 12.

What's up with this week's Tokyo event named as olympic qualifiying event? There will be some direct quotas given? https://www.triathlon.org/events/event/2019_tokyo_itu_world_olympic_qualification_event

no...

it's just the olympic test event (with the usual ranking points up for grabs)...maybe ITU wanted to create some hype...:p

but if they have to face the same troubles the open water swimming specialists had to face yesterday in their test event (see dedicated thread), it's gonna be an interesting weekend...:facepalm:

Does the event at least count for the Olympic Ranking ? It's a bit tricky and unfair from ITU to call it "Olympic Qualification Event" even if it is not :spank:

yes, it counts for the OQR (and with major points)...

points 1.3 and 1.4 of this document

It certainly was a qualification event, in terms of points, for the mixed relay - and quite a generous one, as it happens with the same 800 max points as a world series mixed relay event.

I think only there may be only one mixed relay scoring event left, the World Series vent in Abu Dabai next march, before the cutoff on 31 March. I don't think there are any continental champs left to score in...https://www.triathlon.org/uploads/docs/itusport_2018-individual-oq-ranking_20171210.pdf

The top 7 nations in the rankings get an auto 2+2 athletes in both individual and relay race, while a further three can win 2+2 and relay spots in the final qualifier mixed relay race proper in May in Chengdu - the lucky top 7 will, of course, be excluded from that race, as will any lucky countries who've managed to hit 2+2 'organically' within the individual rankings  - the indy rankings will award 26 places 'sequentially' on rankings, but will a) ignore the first two for the 'lucky 7' (sensibly enough), and will also, of course ignore any from a nation that has hit it's max of 3 per NOC in that individual event - several US, GB and French, for example, will be skipped over - notably GB for example, hit it's women limit as high as world ranked number 7 (non standford, currently GB #4 - which is not to say GB can't select Non, they can, but they only get three spots, come what may) - the effect is that ranking qualifications could very easily go into the mid forties early fifties, and even into sixties and seventies, despite technically only going to #26

Given all that, my rough and ready calculation is that no team outside the top 7 can catch Germany, who are currently 6th, even if Germany don't even turn up in Abu Dabai - The Netherlands, currently seventh, can be caught, theoretically by Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Canada, but Germany are simply too far ahead.

so, to all intents and purposes the following teams have already mathematically secured a minimum 2+2 from the mixed relay: FRA, AUS, USA, GBR, NZL and GER.

The following has a guaranteed host 2+2: JPN

Slightly more mathematically tenuous, I think the following have guaranteed relay spots by dint of having athletes who cannot be squeezed out of 2+2 individual spots; Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico, South Africa.

The three nations most likely to need the Chengdu event, it seems to me are likely to come from Canada, Russia, Portugal, Norway  and Brazil - decently strong relay teams, with some very strong individuals, but lacking in numbers (all 5 have an automatic 2+1 from individual rankings) unless a final qualifier makes a late surge. Canada, however, could still realistically take the seventh spot through the Abu Dabai event, in which case the netherlands are probably safe anyway, and it becomes three from 4.

According to German media, Germany is qualified in the mixed relay, since they will definitily finish among the top seven Teams. Since Germany is currently sixth, it means that at least six out of the seven Teams from World Ranking are already qualified; https://www.dtu-info.de/news/2019/tokio-2020-mixed-relay-qualifiziert-sich-fuer-olympia.html

Are we safe to assume that the top 7 teams in the Mixed Relay (and so 14 Men and Women places) are already settled?  World Triathlon ended the Mixed Relay qualification period as at 16 March 2020, and the start lists for the Mixed Relay Qualification event in Lisbon next week assumes this list is finalised (eg no Netherlands who came 7th, but Belgium in 8th is competing).

    • 2 things...   first, for what concerns the cooperation between inline skating and speedskating federations...sorry to disppoint some of you, but there's a great cooperation between them   the point is that many "summer" skaters just don't want to try the ice because they have too much to give up for that   you name places like Collalbo or Baselga, but for the "summer skating" guys from centeral and southern regions it's not an option, it's not that they make it for a living with those disciplines, they have to focus on their studies and build a post-competitive sport career and they just can't place themselves into a hole in the mountains when they maybe are studying in some prestigious universities in the big cities   as I already posted more than once, the idea of covering one of those tracks in the mountains was something idiotic, a political concession impossible to be sustained   the one and only chance to build a true legacy and an efficient, attractive national training center was to build a permanent indoor oval in Milan, beside the Forum   that would have given all the "summer skaters" a true opportunity to try the ice experience and at the same time find the most useful, attractive, prestigious places to continue their studies and try and manage them together with their sports career   any other place wouldn't stand a chance   second...don't give Salvini any credit he doesn't deserve...actually, I think he doesn't even know that in Cortina there's a sliding sports track    it's not thanks to him that the Cortina track's building finally went underway
    • c'mon, guys! relax! sciallatevi un po'!    you're making me sick...it's just the season start and this is a sport where only the world championship (and Olympic, in the specific years) medals count   don't get mad for a couple of races held thousend miles away from home after the team had already passed their first climax (the internal selection)...there are still 2 full seasons before the Olympics

    • very poor performance by the US bullpen both Yesterday and Today    not very impressed by this US team for the entire tournament, also in the Mexican first group (Panama deserved to qualify more than them, but they were lucky with the draw and won the decisive direct matchup)   Venezuela confirmed themselves as a very strong team at bat, but with too many troubles on the mound   Today against Japan they had to make a pitching change already in the 1st inning and basically they had to go for a bullpen game, but it didn't come out like the Dodgers'   Japan always on top of their game, even when the pitching staff doesn't perform at best...frankly, they look more and more unbeatable when no MLB superstar is involved (like in this case), but also when it comes down to the top of the pops it's not that they look worse (see 2023 WBC)  there's a serious risk that their domination becomes even too easy, the gap between them and the rest of the world is widening year after year   Taiwan might look like a surprise, but after the 2023 fail, I was sure they were going to rebound and establish themselves among the top teams in the WBSC tournaments, as they are very good in each and every aspect of the game (batting, pitching...maybe a bit less on defense, but you can't have it all)
