Tennis Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

I don't understand the Qualification format for Doubles.

The document states that 32 teams will participate. 1 team is the hostteam.

Numbers 1 to 10 on the Doubles World Ranking will get a place.

Then: Additional places up to and including the 24th Direct Acceptance team will be allocated to the highest ranked teams based on the Combined Ranking of each team on 7 June 2021.

After the 24th team, which teams will fill up the draw to 32 teams? I presume they will use the Combined Ranking again, but why are they speaking of the 24th Direct Acceptance?

Hopefully Dutch Demi Schuurs will qualify, however she's not in the top 10 of the World Doubles Ranking. She wants to play with Kiki Bertens.

On the men's side Wesley Koolhof and JJ Rojer (both outside the top 10) want to participate.

After the 24th it most probably will be singles players who have already qualified. The only situation in which more doubles players will get a chance is if the 86 spots for a gender are not filled. But since 64 spots will be filled by singles we should assume after 24 teams it will be singles players who will complete the draw.

I don't know about Wta.

But these two are very comfortable in qualifying.

Doping?

"Benoit Paire has been excluded from selection for the Olympic Games in Tokyo by the French Tennis Federation for ‘repetition of deeply inappropriate behaviour’.

In a statement, the FFT revealed they spoke to Paire in March after finding his ‘unsportsmanlike’ conduct in a match against Francisco Cerundolo in Buenos Aires, as well as previous incidents, to be in breach of their Code of Ethics.

Paire apologised for the behaviour and expressed his desire to improve in a letter, but the FFT followed up on the issue after the Frenchman’s “deeply unethical” words following his defeat to Jordan Thompson at the Monte Carlo Masters this month.

“Responsibility, for our sport and for France, on a proposal from the DTN and in consultation with Sébastien Grosjean, the Comex has decided to exclude Benoît Paire from the future list of players who will represent the FFT and France this summer at Tokyo,” said Gilles Moretton, president of the FFT.

“His behavior, which has been deeply inappropriate since the start of the year, seriously undermines the values of sport, such as tennis, and is totally incompatible with the Olympic spirit.

“I repeat, it is the duty of each player and each high-level player to respect the values of our sport and it is up to them to be exemplary on the court as well as off, especially vis-à-vis the young people of our country.”

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
