Problem is not with your coaches, it's with the UWW allowing Russian athletes to represent all other European nations. At least your wrestler was a Ukrainian

Why wouldn't they allow it? This is how sport works in the 21st century, there's nothing unusual about this. The issue isn't with that Russians are competing for other countries, the issue is that wrestling is so unpopular in other countries that second tier Russian wrestlers are able to take quotas from athletes born outside of Russia. Solve it by making wrestling more popular outside of Russia.

Well, I don't know the details in wrestling, but some federations do have strict nationality requirements.

World Athletics changed it recently, slowing Qatar down. ISU requires the athletes to skip a whole season of international events if they wish to make a change. And so on.

Kudos to Ligeti, at least it was a close match against the Russian. Only one Hungarian Russian in Tokyo in men's freestyle, no wrestlers born in Hungary for the first time since... ever? Since the start of the sport?

According to Olympedia - the first time since Amsterdam 1928. :coffee:

They should allow but with a 4 year buffer period. Can't see these wrestlers making wrestling popular either unless it's a country with very less sucess at Olympics like macedonia

Doesn't wrestling have a similar rule? I am pretty sure our Russians didn't compete on the international level for a whole year before they started entering events as Hungarians.

This rule doesn't make much difference when the sport is dying in some countries, at least in some disciplines. We wouldn't have these Russians if we would have enough top level Hungarians in men's freestyle like in greco-roman. We are a successful nation in wrestling but the sport is still starting to die here.

UWW requires 2 years of inactivity BUT only official tournaments count (Worlds, Continentals) these guys usually think about switching to another country when they fail to make Russian team for 2 years in a row :d so that's not a problem for them.

This is how it works, because the rules are set this way.. Why bother popularizing any sport, when you can print the documents and "hire" a few people to secure the budget. This is the most important thing. Being an Olympic sport gets you Government funding.

You say a dying sport. Well that can be said for half of the Olympic sports. Do you think more than 10 nations will still care about wrestling, if it's not an Olympic sport, or archery, or taekwondo, or canoeing, or diving and i can go on. Heck, some of them can't even get 10 competitive nations now.

You save sports from the bottom -> up. Interest is not given, it's built. But that is work, hard work! You have to start from the children, from the schools, you have to have clubs, town clubs, regional clubs, coaches, staff, facilities. But no one wants to wait 10 years for this. It's much easier to get 3-4 Russians etc. to have some results, get the funding and if something else pops, it's a bonus.

I have said it numerous times here, but switching nations should be made extremely hard. To represent you have to be born there, or both parents have to be from the country, or you have be living there for 15 years (even though in modern free times, this not very relevant) or take a lengthy non-compete clause (4 years at minimum like a doping ban).

And i know this would never happen. Because all these sports will shoot themselves in the foot, because the "quality" and number of nations will drop. Or they will bring some EU law, about work rights, human rights etc. Like almost every football club has 10/11 foreign players in their line-ups.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
