Women's Football Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

It happens all the time in events where the "home nations" enter as separate teams. Scotland is only eligible to represent GB in curling as well. If you look at Olympic history, GB hasn't done so good in team sports other than football (when entering) and some of the classic team sports at this stage are non-existent in GB at world class level (minus field hockey). You ain't gonna see GB qualify in handball, volleyball or basketball whatsoever. These sports are DOA in the UK.

Apart from the proviso you have made about football, GB also have a strong record in hockey with more Olympic medals than any country apart from the Netherlands. They also have a good record in rugby/rugby sevens. You're right about the other Olympic team sports but then no country has a record of success in every one of the team sports given their different histories and backgrounds.

P.S. One record that is unlikely to be broken is that GB is the only country to have won Olympic gold medals in both hockey and ice hockey.

Kenya was a part of the British Empire. Froome is like the last living proof in pro sports that colonialism was actually a thing.

Btw, why are we talking Froome in a football thread? :lol:

Apart from the fact that Froome's dad moved to Kenya long after it had gained independence so it's colonial past is of no real relevance in this case.

Rugby is a Commonwealth sports. There's a reason why so few teams actually excell at this and they are the same nations over & over again. Same applies for cricket which is like played in one country in Europe, lol. Olympics is a global sport, rugby & cricket are no global sports by any means. Rugby sevens appeases the unknown tbh. It's a waste of an Olympic spot IMO.

Unlikely? Literally was an overtime away from happening with Germany last year.

From the perspective of other countries it actually benefits them as GB has to try and qualify with teams weakened by the absence of players from the home

- other home nations can participate in qualifying events and disturb the competition: Switzerland was eliminated in the WC qualifiers because Scotland won their group, not a great benefit for them;

- conflict of interest can arise when two home nations play each other: England played both Wales and Scotland in the road to Tokyo...now England is much stronger than the other two but still it is weird to have situations like the game vs Wales, when the Welsh players would have eliminated themselves from the Olympics if they had won.

Plus England was cleared by the other federations as representative for GB quite late during the qualification process, I think everything should be settled before the start of the qualifications in order to be fair to other teams.

Is it possible that England's quota will be distributed among losing nations in the quarter-finals?

No, GBR qualifies on the quota won by England. That's possible in the Women's competition.

Germany was close in 2018, only losing against Russia in last minute. I also believe that USA has the potential to win hockey gold on the women's side.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

I agree that there is a potential conflict of interest. However, ask any Scot which they would much rather happen - Team GB qualify for the Olympics or Scotland beat England. 999 times out of a thousand they will say Scotland to beat England!!!  Even the Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon said as much before the World Cup.
