Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

My prediction is that GBR will get around 45-50 places via the automatic standard (not counting relays and those who qualify via world rankings)

I'd also predict Germany to get around the same number.

GB has a clear advantag in mens track events, it will be hard for Germany to make up for that in field events.

I think 50 athletes achieving the standard would be very good for Germany, the best case would be around 60 athletes.

Note - The 200m at the Boston Games was not eligible for Olympic qualification times as it was run on a straight 200m not a curve.

Zharnel Hughes ran 20,00, Kyle Greaux 20.09

Here are the ten largest athletic teams so far qualified to the Olympics (I took the top three athletes for nations with more than 3 eligible athletes)

1.   :USA United States - 64

2.   :KEN Kenya - 28

3.   :CHN China - 24

3.   :JAM Jamaica - 24

5.   :GER Germany - 20

6.   :ETH Ethiopia - 18

6.   :JPN Japan - 18

8.   :GBR Great Britain - 17

9.   :POL Poland - 16

10. :CAN Canada - 12

10. :RUS Russia - 12

10. :ESP Spain - 12

Unsurprisingly the United States is dominating the field. Kenya is second thanks to being dominant in long distance events, but could struggle to maintain its position as nations that are generally good in all events start to catch up.

Kenya has started to branch a little though. They have Julius Yego in Javelin, and of memory serves they have some decent athletes in the 400m Hurdles and 200m

True, but I feel Jamaica has done a better job at going from specialists to more general. Regardless both nations should be among the 10 largest teams.

Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country

    • Lots of injuries, including often just pure bad-luck stuff like a fall from a set of stairs, illness, and of course the Sochi tragedy in 2014: one of her biathlon friends, young Julia Pieper, killed herself with a biathlon rifle early during the Olympics (she wasn't on the team, but was a training partner of both Preuss and Dahlmeier). Obviously a hard hit, which led to terrible Olympics for Preuss, with a DNF, awful results in her other individual races and a relay where she was the first runner for Germany, but fell early on, got snow in her rifle and broke a pole and ended up losing almost 3 minutes, which in turn resulted in Germany being off the podium for the first time ever.   After that came all the injuries and illness and everything. So glad to finally see her have her big individual global gold, that is so well deserved.
