This is just a proof that cross-country courses are much softer these days. If you watch a replay of Los Angeles 1984, you'll see that nobody spooked at water falls. And those were actually real water falls compared to these.

Refusals are not a lottery. That's like saying a long jump is lottery because of the possibility of having a foul jump.

Except that you have six attempts in Long Jump. Or at least three before you get eliminated.  So one foul hasn't as bad consequences  as a refusal in Eventing.
