I don't hear a lot of positives about the skateboarding. Hey, who ever thought that adults actually will NOT get excited with random kids competing at the Olympics. I'm sure those medals won by 13 year olds look record-breaking on paper but why give this event an Olympic status? How many 14-15 year olds kids over the world will actually turn on the TV to specifically watch this? Because it sure looks like the adults have better things to follow at the Games.

Coyping of the slopestyle in summer version doesn't work for one reason. At the winter Games usually the same nations dominate the events. At the summer games every nation has something to cheer for w/o having to add anything new. IOC struck out swinging with the skateboarding, I wonder how long appeasing of the 13 year old kids lasts?

And those children who did tune in would have seen men falling down the staircase without helmets on. Fantastic role models, no doubt.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that too. Yeah, just a complete mishit by IOC when trying to attract new fanbase for whatever reason. I don't see this event having any sort of staying power since in Paris we'll probably see more 13 year old kids.

At least here in Brazil, skateboarding was a HUGE hit and I'm sure Brazilians will RIOT if it gets removed from the Olympics.

I agree that the format of the competition is not great, though. This is the Olympics, not some random best trick competition. Both runs should count, with no discarded scores, and three out of five tricks should also count.

And even though two Brazilian skateboarders got medals, Brazilian fans are in love with the Peruvian male skateboarder and the Filipina skateboarder. This sport needs some adjustments, but I have to say it's now one of the top 5 Olympic sports I'm going to watch, with or without Brazilians competing.

I second the opinion of Thiago, this was the first skateboarding competition I watched in my life and it was a funny and enjoyable event. Scoring will be adjusted hopefully but the competition itself is certainly TV friendly (more than surfing, IMO)

Every new stuff is cool for like 5 minutes. I still remember when snowboard giant slalom was deemed cool when it debuted at Nagano 1998. Fast forward 20 years and it's deemed boring and outdated with all the attention focused on SBX and big air :p

3 girls who won medals are 42 years old combined.

I saw highlights and all i can say is that this sport is ridiculous.

Olympics are hitting bottom, no doubt

It might be because I'm starting to get used to slopestyle and such, which makes this look a bit...pale. In slopestyle for example, the athletes themselves are the main things moving around and upside down and such, whereas here it's mostly the athletes being fairly static and the board flipping around a little in some tricks. Which is obviously really hard to do, but makes it look much less dynamic.

Maybe the problem is that you guys are trying hard to compare this sport to other sports, while it tries to do its own thing.

    • Traitor is a nice way to describe him, really the only explanation for his actions (because I'm going to naively believe he is not actually dumb) is that he is a foreign agent and not even really hiding it, at all
    • Not too familiar with this sport, but do the same athletes compete in boulder and lead?
    • At 6 teams there should be no a rule a minimum 3 continents should be represented
    • Excellent suggestion & perhaps the most logical one. I think IOC & ICC will approve on a similar format.  I would just tweak it a little bit.  I won’t give a guaranteed host quota but allot 2 quotas in Americas-Africa qualifying tournament.  Also Europe will have 1 fixed quota from their qualifying tournament.  So , it will be    1 - 2016 T20 world champions 2&3 - Asian qualifying tournament  4&5 - Americas-Africa qualifying tournament 6- European qualifying tournament
    • OMG, Trump seriously fights with showers
    • This is going a very tricky decision for the ICC. You can't really use the current world rankings because ranking points will be won or lost against teams that are not eligible for the Olympics. I think that any country who fails to qualify because will launch an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and probably win.   So here's what I suggest for the six.   1 Possible host country place - USA - but only possible - what you do is recalculate the ICC rankings and take out all points gained against non-Olympic teams. Then once you done this and taken out non-Olympic countries like West Indies and either England and Scotland then if the USA are in a high enough ranking position they qualify. This position could be as high as 10th or as low as 20th depending on how important the IOC and ICC see their presence in LA. (I'm assuming that, like in curling and women's soccer Great Britain would nominate either England or Scotland as their official qualifying representatives) USA are currently 18th   2 2026 World T20 champions   3 and 4 Asia-Pacific qualifying tournament winners and runners-up   5 and 6 Euro-Africa-Americas qualifying tournament winners and runners-up   (7) If the USA don't meet the qualifying standard then a play off between the 3rd place teams in the 2 above categories decides the final qualifiers   The qualifying tournament would be held under IOC eligibility rules not the ICC rules
    • Because of Wimbeldon I thought Tennis was moving to the second week anyway? Not sure it will have quite as good attendance starting just a week after Wimbledon ends. (Assuming its finals are the 8th and 9th July).
    • With only 6 spots, don't think there is space for Continental qualifiers and Host quota. I would have 2026 World Cup Winner. Three qualifiers (these can be semi-continental with some continents merged) with 1 spot each. Rest 2 to rankings.
    • Finally some common sense. IOC decides to put all 3 disciplines in programme for LA28.    So now, we will see Speed, Lead and Boulder separate, with quota of 38 athletes per gender all together.
    • GSOC Players Championships, ATP Monte Carlo Masters, FIVB Elite 16 Saquarema, and the remaining Canucks/Warriors games (as usual)   No Speedo Canadian Open/Diving WC/WA Continental Tour Botswana due to scheduling conflicts.
