Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 News Road to LA 2028

I still remember that travesty from oppening of Paris 24.

If anyone could turn the games (oppening and closing included) back into sport thing rather than some travesty of all sorts (political, woke culture, religious blasphemies), i could only approve that.

Given Trump wants a law saying that only gender assigned at birth should be recognized, I wonder how such a law (along with any laws "protecting women’s sports") would affect athletes with DSDs. Because it would make it illegal to consider athletes like Caster Semenya or Imane Khelif as anything other than female, since that’s their gender assigned at birth and that’s apparently immutable.

There is an interesting tension there.

National law and sport rules are completely different. Like, there's a law in Canada that if you punch someone in the face you will get charged with battery. But if you're playing hockey and do it, you'll only get 5 minutes in a penalty box. Japan only recognizes gender at birth and this was not an issue in 2020(1).

Any law Trump and the Republicans pass can only apply to governmental organizations, i.e. school competitions. Private sport events, like the NHL, MLB and the Olympics, can still decided who can and cannot participate in what events. If the NHL wants a female goaltender to play, they can do that tomorrow if they want. If the IOC decides Semenya can participate in the female category, then that's their right as a private entity. I'm sure Hitler wasn't happy that Jews, black people and other groups were allowed to participate in 1936, either.

Of course, I've been saying for a long time they should do away with "male" and "female" categories and just have "Over/Under X amount of testosterone" categories.

Doesn't that decision sit with World Athletics rather than the IOC?

Absolutely. World Athletics outranks the IOC in these decisions.

Yes, you're right. But the point is that the private sporting agency supersedes national law on this subject.

What is your prediction for US viewership of Olympic 2028 opening ceremony?

Depends what time they start. If it's the usual 8pm local start it will likely be lower since over half the country lives +3 hours ahead.

How does 100 million sound to you?

Way too high. That's Super Bowl numbers for an event that's mostly watching athletes walking in, a bunch of speeches and a few performances sprinkled in. I enjoy it, but I understand most people wouldn't.

As a comparison the 1996 Olympics had about 40 million US viewership, adjusting for population that puts it at around 48 million. Throw in fewer people owning a TV and this event not exactly bringing people to bars to watch, I would say if they broke 50 million it would be very successful
