Disappointed that Leerdam beat Kok   Her Instagram persona is too much for my liking. And now that she added the little troll it is even more unsufferable.

Tomorrow the women's 1.000m: Start list on olympics.com

This is a very difficult distance to predict (especially places 4-18) with a clear top 3 based on the season so far followed by an extremely long list of outsiders who could medal if one of the top 3 slip up.

  1. :NED Jutta Leerdam
  2. :NED Femke Kok
  3. :JPN Miho Takagi
  4. :USA Brittany Bowe
  5. :CAN Béatrice Lamarche
  6. :JPN Rio Yamada
  7. :CHN Han Mei
  8. :JPN Yukino Yoshida
  9. :KOR Lee Na-Hyun
  10. :KAZ Nadezhda Morozova
  11. :CHN Yin Qi
  12. :CZE Nikola Zdráhalová
  13. :KOR Kim Min-Sun
  14. :GBR Ellia Smeding
  15. :USA Erin Jackson
  16. :KAZ Elizaveta Golubeva
  17. :NED Suzanne Schulting
  18. :POL Karolina Bosiek
  19. :BEL Isabelle van Elst
  20. :POL Natalia Czerwonka
  21. :SUI Kaitlyn McGregor
  22. :GER Anna Ostlender
  23. :AUT Vanessa Herzog
  24. :CHN Tian Ruining
  25. :BEL Fran Vanhoutte
  26. :KAZ Kristina Silaeva

  30. :CAN Carolina Hiller-Donnelly

Well, the 1000m is done, and honestly, the top of my bracket looking like a mirror image of the podium is a nice ego boost.  Jutta absolutely delivered under pressure in that final pair to take gold with a new Olympic record (). Femke Kok was so close with her own OR just minutes earlier, but Leerdam is just on another level right now.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my prediction. A few things that jumped out at me while looking at the final times versus my sheet:

  • The Podium Wall: Having the top five finish exactly in the order I predicted (Leerdam, Kok, Takagi, Bowe, Lamarche) doesn't happen often. It’s a bit predictable based on the season so far, sure, but those women are just that consistent.

  • Don't Underestimate Olympic Champions: I definitely didn't give Suzanne Schulting (3x Olympic Champion) and Erin Jackson (1x Olympic Champion) enough credit. They both out-skated my predictions by 9 spots. Jackson especially proved she’s not just a 500m specialist by grabbing 6th place, while Schulting’s 8th place finish from the very first pair was a massive statement.

  • The Japan Divergence: While Takagi was rock solid for bronze as expected, Yukino Yoshida had a rough day. I had her pegged for 8th, but she slipped all the way to 16th. On the flip side, Rio Yamada met expectations, finishing 7th when I had her just outside the top five.

  • China’s Mid-Pack Slide: I expected a bit more from Han Mei and Tian Ruining. They both finished significantly lower than I anticipated, with Han Mei dropping 6 spots and Ruining sliding 5 spots down from my prediction.

As predicted, it was the mid-pack where my prediction got messy, but seeing the Dutch go 1-2 with back-to-back Olympic records was amazing!
