Athletics EAA Team European Championships 2025

Using the season's best of each athlete from the entry list I have calculated a projected points calculation for the 2nd Division.

Obviously this is full of caveats due to the fact some athletes are just starting their seasons, some season's best will have been vastly improved since the entry list was released earlier this week and some strong athletes have no seasons best yet and thus their points will not reflect their true potential. Also I did not include the 3 relay events either. Nevertheless I thought it would be nice to calculate it and share.

Rank  Nation Pts
1  :BEL Belgium 407
2  :NOR Norway 384
3  :TUR Turkey 358
4  :SLO Slovenia 340
5  :IRL Ireland 333
6  :ROU Romania 307
7  :CRO Croatia 304
8  :AUT Austria 277
8  :SVK Slovakia 277
10  :DEN Denmark 267
11  :EST Estonia 257
12  :ISR Israel 248
13  :SRB Serbia 239
14  :CYP Cyprus 230
15  :BUL Bulgaria 207
16  :LAT Latvia 189

Belgium should have enough to take the title and Norway should be comfortably in the promotion spots.

There might be a decent battle for the third promotion spot and with Slovenia at home they are likely to outperform expectations and could really challenge Turkey for promotion. On paper Ireland are in the mix too especially as the relays are not included in this projection and Ireland will be among the strongest teams in the relay events. But I think we'd need to be on our A-game to earn a shot at promotion and I think it might be just beyond them this time.

I very like athletic team Championship but if your team is in middle of 16 super league, i do not see there any special motivation to finish for example 6th or 12th.

But i do not know how improve this motivation? More money for better standing? Maybe some extra quotas for european championships? cut it back to 8 or 12 teams?

Any ideas?

I can't talk to the motivation, but the vast majority of countries are sending their top ranked athlete on SB in most events. And if not the top ranked, the second ranked (and I'm sure some of the absences can be explained by injury etc).

I'm sure the athletes themselves are competitive by nature and will want to do the best that they can. Who can forget the Belgian shot putter who ran the hurdles in Poland a few years back, just to help her team. That's the natural competitive nature these folks have.

I doubt Israel will participate. The other two relegation spots will be between Cyprus, Latvia, Serbia and Croatia, maybe Austria.

when it comes to promotion clearly Belgium, Norway and hopefully Slovenia. Turkey and Romania with some chances as well.

Personally, speaking for Ukraine, which is in the middle of the road in terms of athletics, it's a huge chance for our athletes to compete with strong guys and fight for quotas to WCh in Tokyo, so it's a great start to check your level against top athletes, earn ranking points and set season or personal bests

Exactly  Only a few people are on the DL circuit, or the Continental Gold tour, so this will be a big chance to compete against Olympians, European Champions etc.  If that doesn't  motivate you, it's time for another career.

Events don't need to be "pinnacle events" for athletes to care. The team championships is a perfect ramp up/check your status event in the outdoor athletics season. It doesn't overlap with the pinnacle events as it is on the off-years relative to the European Championships and the World Championships is over two months away.

The timing is almost perfect, marking the mid-point of the outdoor season and the team format makes the event a little different for the athletes which probably adds a little bit more interest.

    • That's so they can play in both venues in Canada.  Will mean that the UEFA Path A winner has to go from Toronto to Los Angeles and then up to Seattle.   Someone was bound to draw the short straw in that group since 4 of the matches are Central, but 2 are in Santa Clara.  Unfortunately, that's Algeria.
