:USA David Taylor surprisingly came out of retirement :yikes: to try his chance in US trials at 92kg for 2024 World Championships (non-Olympic weights) this weekend

there are some rumors that the great Abdulrashid Sadulev also wants to try his chance at 92kg to add another world title to his resume, personally I think that's not correct but we will see.

but if this is true and if Taylor wins the US trials and again if Albania don't act shit like last year it will be a hell of a competition between Taylor, Sadulaev and Ghasempour. :hyper: much more interesting than anything we saw in Paris.

ps: the great Jordan Burroughs will wrestle in US trials too, probably for his last hurrah

with the next Olympics being in LA, I'm not that surprised that the US guys suddenly make up their mind about retirement (maybe announced a bit too early)

:IRI Hassan Yazdani after his shoulder surgery in France yesterday
(he had another shoulder surgery last year which wasn't great and we saw what happened in the Olympic final )

most people thought the Olympic final was the last match of his career but that's not his plan. he still wants to come back to win that 2nd Olympic gold after losing two Olympic finals in 2021 and 2024  in dramatic ways

even if everything goes well he will be out for 2025 season and will come back to the mat in 2026. he won World/Olympic medals from 2015 to 2024 and this means his 10-year streak will be broken :(

UWW changes few things for Russian/Belarus wrestlers

https://uww.org/article/uww-updates-eligibility-criteria-russia-belarus-wrestlers

I assume with the new criteria almost all (if not all) of them will be eligible for UWW competitions. I'm talking about top Russian wrestlers.

which means we will most probably see Sadulaev in Albania next month. :hyper: Uguev too, from what I heard he has to wrestle AbbasGadzhi Magomedov first to make the team.

Sadulaev and Uguev took part in pro-war rally. if it's not "public declarations [in written or orally] in support of the war", then what should it be?

Bring back the 1991 borders

You mean the rally when Rylov and Bolshunov were there, for example?

preliminary entry list for the World Championships (non-Olympic weights) 2024

https://uww.org/article/world-championships-non-olympic-weights-2024-entries

Abdulrashid Sadulaev won the Russian trials yesterday (he didn't look good though) and therefore his name is here, as well as another Olympic Champion Zaur Uguev. with David Taylor, Jordan Burroughs and Reza Geraei we have at least 5 Olympic Champions in the list :yes

also interesting to see lots of guys (Berdimuratov, Ganbaatar, Tsakulov, Kaipanov etc) cut weight massively from their usual Olympic weight to wrestle here.  which shows the importance of a World Championship title

ps: 2024 Olympians are not allowed to wrestle here.

  • 4 weeks later...

Today in Albania :p (World U23 Champs) both guys got disqualified obviously

A bit warmup for the real deal. World Championships (non-Oly weights) and the big battle of Taylor/Sadulaev/Ghasempour :bounce:

UWW's new rules for change of nationality

this doesn't look great for likes of Bahrain, Albania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Serbia and few more.

still it won't make a huge huge impact for the next Olympic cycle because each NOC still can use 2 mercenaries per style in each tournament but after 2028 it will be reduced to just 1.

some of those countries already have 3 or 4 (or more) Russian mercenaries per style. from now on they have to pick 2 of them for each tournament.

I assumed the new rule applies to previous mercenaries too
.

https://cdn.uww.org/2024-11/change_of_nationality_regulation_eng_oct2024_final.pdf

also you can't wrestle for another country without a passport. (UWW allowed that for some years) current non-national wrestlers can continue like that until the end of 2026 though.

it could be better but in general I'm OK with new rules. good job by UWW. :yes

    • I love that it is more straightforward in relation to the number of quotas and does not allow possible problems as it was in Tokyo and Paris.
    • I love the judo qualification system, for me is the best in all disciplines. It combines a strong circuit, and it allows 100 or so countries to participate in.   So, maybe, if UWW does its job properly, it will be a good thing.
    • China Media Group (CMG) will broadcast all 116 gold medal events of the Milan Winter Olympics live on CCTV-1, CCTV-5, CCTV-5+ and CCTV-16. It will also use technologies such as 4K/8K ultra-high definition to enhance the viewing experience. Live broadcasts of all events will be carried out from 16:00 Beijing time to 06:00 the next day.
    • The strength of the UK is that they are 100% focused on the track, while Italy must to navigate between the track and the road: the line-up is different for practically every event, etc. Paternoster should focus 100% on the track; she won't win anything big on the road anymore. As it is, she's weak both there and there. The situation is different with Balsamo, as she's also having significant success on the road and likely earns the most money there.
    • Discovery+ in the UK have also got their schedule up now.     I notice that only thing listed as being in UHD is the Opening Ceremony though....
    • The problem over the last few years was that no-one was able to keep pace with the big Katie Archibald turns. Looks to be sorted now.
    • The women's top 50 is so crammed with athletes from the same five nations that it is not inconceivable they are unable to fill the full quota from the top 50, in which case a third double spot would open up between USA/BEL/GBR
    • That women's pursuit team looks brutally fast. Batter you over the head into submission brutal, perhaps not seen since the early Trott-Rowsell days The 4 minute barrier could be on borrowed time.   The two British women sprinters Finucane and Caldwell also look pretty ominous, indeed the whole women's sprint team looks in some shape and with some depth to get that result without Finucane   Work to do for the British men's teams, but they won't be unhappy either, not to mention Joe Truman's unexpected Kilo win.
    • I prefer to do mine like this guy (https://app.podiumsport.it/) does his "Projected Medals" as probability based rather than straight medal picking... all things being equal, conversion rates should be about the same and the outliers come out in the wash. Unfortunately most people just like medal picking, and think any other approach is weird
