Van Tichelt wins by armbar!

Finally some Olympic joy for his coach Robert Krawczyk who was ipponed 4 secs from the end in Athens OG SF while leading on points and finished 5th thereafter.

Now let's see if Ono finally scores gold for Japan ;)

HEEEELLLL YEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

:POR:POR:POR

Bronze medal!!!!!!! :champion: WE HAVE A MEDAL!!!!!

For all you that are from countries that usually get a lot of medals, this sounds like overreaction, but Portugal had 23 medals in 23 olympic editions (previous to Rio), so you can do the math and see how much a medal means for my nation!!! Our social media is going crazy!!!

And it's Telma, who's a 5 time EC and always missed the medals on Olympics, so she was the one everyone was really cheering, she totally deserve this!!!!

:POR:POR:POR

My medal's goal is achieved, from now on it will be (an amazing) bonus!

I prefer judo over wrestling so thankfully they always schedule athletics for the second week and judo for the first. Judo/Athl;etics clash would be criminal for me as a fan.

Only in Sydney I think they had athletics in the first week due to their hopes in swimming for the second week IIRC.

Only know, when seeing a replay, I notice that the beautiful story of Silva winning gold should never have happened...if I'm not mistaken she should have been disqualified for an illegal leg grab in the final :yikes: (not the first time, she was disqualified for the same illegal action in the 2012 Olympic quarter finals..)

I was really happy with her gold medal because it was awesome to see, but now I'm sad that the Mongolian has had a gold medal stolen (probably because of home field advantage for Silva)...

I don't understand the rules in deep, but you can clearly see in the video that she didn't grab the leg, her hands were in the opponent's arm throughout the entire move. I don't think we're having any "home advantage" in Judo, but of course I expect people to put every brazilian medal under question.

Well, don't get me wrong: I much prefer Silva winning the gold than Dorjsuren, since I have no special thing about Mongolia (neither positive nor negative) and a home gold was a fantastic moment for Silva. I was convinced it was an illegal leg grab and in that case she should clearly have been disqualified, but after seeing some photos from different angles, I'm starting to think it maybe was not an illegal leg grab after all :p

    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
    • Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel with a 5th place PB in Semmering GS!
    • Today RDC will defeat Senegal  and Tunisia 0-0 Nigeria
