That's actually a pretty good result for your girls, we beat you much easier last month at the European Championships :dunno:

in France I have the impression that in water polo and field hockey France will remain as weak as ever. why are we not progressing??

:GBR get battered 10-22 in the end. We looked promising in parts but couldn't convert our chances compared to Italy. Italy were always gonna win the group so our best chance of avoiding Hungary or Australia in the playoffs is to beat Canada.

Easier said than done IMO. Anyways, while Italy are the favourites to win pool, I wouldn’t count out Canada, lately they’ve been playing some close matches against some of the other Olympic quota contending teams (beat already qualified Greece on penalties and lost by one goal to Hungary in pool play at last years Worlds)

Also to me this quote “Our best chance of avoiding Hungary or Australia in the playoffs is to beat Canada.” implies that you think you actually have a chance at a quota.

It would take a series of injuries from two of Hungary, Italy, and Canada for that to ever happen.

I don't think we have a chance, but our best chance is to avoid yous, Hungary and Italy for as long as possible and have them be drawn each other or a pre qualified team. Wed played decent in parts today and contested in a couple of quarters, so if we can get our shot conversion rate up to that of Italy's I believe we can give you lot a game.

Unfortunately a 10-8 defeat against USA for our girls. USA was better on all fronts. Hopefully our girls can raise their level against :KAZ and :BRA, after which they can impress again in the intermediate round against :FRA or :CHN.

It's less about the Olympic quota and more about the likely increase in financial support that they would get from UK Sport if they were able to sneak through to the quarter finals.

Either way, I don’t see it happening. Great Britain has been beating a lot of the lesser teams lately, which is good for them, but nothing has shown me that Great Britain is capable of defeating a team of Canada’s caliber

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the coaching position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece, and there the results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands second right away, because we don't have such resources and money.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector
