This is a useful collection of tweets

And it confirms what we assume to be the truth right now. Do you think the IOC will go with 2021, or should we expect a surprise like 2022 or late 2020?

That's some of the best and most rational analysis I've seen on this yet.  Thank you for sharing!

2021 seems like the most logical option.  Moving the Olympics to 2022 puts them in the same calendar year as both the Winter Olympics and the Youth Olympics, not to mention it would displace both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.  2021 therefore is the better solution as they already deal with World Athletics and FINA, so ti inconvenience them is easier than 2 organizations they don't have direct involvement with.  Plus that has to be easier for the Tokyo organizers to not have to wait an additional year.

We’re split on the logic of 2021 or 2022 (and I’d imagine it might be for the same reason IOC members are split on it as well). I think that will be the big story here. Either way, the international sports calendar is about screwed with a 24 inch dildo :p

What if the situation gets better in summer/autumn but then worsen again next winter in some part of the world...it's better to postpone the Olympics for a couple of months and then maybe to 2021 rather than missing the only opportunity to hold them.

It looks there will be no olympics this summer. Let's play the game then. Let's do the olympics online. The game is IT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TODAY, Today is 23rd. Tomorrow, on 24th, there should be the opening ceremony. The questions for tomorrow, 24 th: 1. WHO WILL LIT THE OLYMPIC FLAME? 2. WHO WILL BE YOUR COUNTRY FLAG BEARER? 3. WHICH COUNTRY WILL LOOK THE BEST IN THE PARADE OF NATIONS?  And what happened so far? On 22nd, sotfball and women's football. Japan beats Australia in opening softball match, it was played in Fukushima to show the world it is safe out there. And first win for TEAM CANADA in softball against Mexico. In women's football USA plays very well, an easy win over New Zealand, postmatch interview with Megan Rapinoe gets viral - strong words on Trump, on world situation, on women rights, on minorities rights etc. Canada wins over Zambia 3-0. On 23rd, softball again and men's football. US proves to be too strong for Canada in a softball, but don't worry, there will be many chances for a revenge in other disciplines. In men's football great play by Spain (3-0 vs Korea Rep.) and by Argentina (3-0 vs New Zealand). Good games for France (2-1 vs Ivory Coast) and Brazil (2-1 vs South Africa), It is a pity Canada didn;t qualify, but Mexico and USA were too strong in qualifying championships. And they prove they are strong with Mexico-Romania 1-0 and USA-New Zealand 1-1. The biggest upset is Egypt win over Germany 2-1 with great play by Mo Salah who scores twice!!! Let;s play together, here is the schedule https://tokyo2020.org/en/schedule/ and here are qualification systems https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics#Sports

:NOR and :GBR also announced their withdrawal if the Games won't postponed to 2021

The Olympics will not happen without GB, Norway, Canada, Australia, etc. It is pretty much a foregone conclusion that the games won’t happen until 2021.

Well, the good ole emotional blackmail usually works the way world has gotten soft in XXI century :p

    • Meant to ask this during the Olympics, but how many of you non-USA peeps are familiar with this song?  In case you don't know, this was written for the LA84 games by John Williams, renowned film score composer (Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park, etc.).  NBC now uses this all the time in their Olympic promos, intros, etc.   I had a friend who moved from the US to England, and when the Olympics came on, he commented that he missed this song.  So, perhaps this song is unknown to non-USers...but I have a sneaky suspicion that you Olympics nerds might have heard it.         Edit: I'm hoping to make it to an athletics session at LA28 so I can be in the stadium where he directed the orchestra to perform this song during the Opening Ceremony.  Williams is still alive, and at 94, I hope he can hang in there two more years to see the Olympics return to LA and receive some honor.  He also composed music for Atlanta '96, and the opening theme of Summon the Heroes also gets used by NBC a lot (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3kNRyh_rj8)
