Sport Events Cancelled due to Coronavirus Outbreak

Recommended Posts

Well. Considering that more and more countries close down, there's still a chance that it could work out for the Olympics, but we may very well need to see some progress in the next couple of weeks. In South Korea the curve could seem to be broken while it may be a week or so before we see Italy moving in a positive direction (hopefully). The other countries could follow if things go right. If that works out, there's still hope!

Like it was said before, even if Coronavirus is past its peak by that point (for which there are no guarantees), Tokyo Olympics would be held in immediate aftermath. That just brings a whole lot of new questions (prevailing risks, fear factor), what could eventually cause very sparse attendance, at best...

Sparse attendance would be fucking awesome! I’d have my pick of tickets, and plenty of room to myself. Plus, I wouldn’t have to worry about catching Covid-19 really.

Well, this was fun. Indoor Brabant is finally cancelled (including a stage of Dressage WC). @heywoodu

On Tuesday it was announced that the event would run with max 1000 people in audience.

On Wednesday it was announced that the event will be held behind closed doors.

On Thursday it was announced that the event has been cancelled.

Well, if Euro gets postponed, then all bets regarding Tokyo are off...

Not really. The Euro is in a completely different part of the world, and it has also the disadvantage that several countries are going to organize it. Olympics are in Japan, which at least right now is in a comparatively good situation (compared to their number of inhabitants). Consisting of several islands probably doesn't hurt Japan either, since the traffic is easier to control.

That said, if the situation is still bad in summer, even if it shouldn't be bad in Japan directly, than they of course can't let thousands of people from all over the world in their country. And right now I do believe that the Olympics will get postponed. But this belief has nothing to do with the Euro.

September/October is a great date for me. If everyone can get their stuff together, it's the best option, if they have to postpone it.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
