Sharapova was always accused of not being a real Russian and basically an American.

 

Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva were in particular against her and Myskina flat out refused to play in the Russian Fed Cup team if Sharapova was selected as well. As it turned out Sharapova didn't make her Russian Fed Cup debut until 2008, basically the year after Myskina was forced to retire due to a persistent ankle injury.

BTW when I read the topic of this thread at first I thought it's another tournament being made by itf just like atp cup I looked 3 or 4 times at the date to assure that this's Australian open I follow

JImenez Kasintseva was the youngest player in the draw. She will turn 15yo in August though she is older than Cori Gauff when the American won the French Open juniors in 2018. Still it's basically two years older than Martina Hingis who won 1993 French Open aged 12 and 8 months
