As for the handshake issue: it's beyond stupid for fencing to force athlete to shake hands. Even tennis, one of the most high class sports there is, allows players to not shake hands. FIE and the fencing community are full of themselves if they think that this is okay. And not just for the Ukraine-Russia situation. Don't ignore the human element of the sport, you can't force athletes to respect each other.

Completely stupid rule. They should have learned during the pandemic that shaking hands is very unsanitary and can lead to the spread of disease. Also if they want to appear like a gentleman's sport, they should maybe punish the athletes for screaming and jumping around after every hit + i don't really have the impression that many athletes have a lot of respect for the referees (especially if they don't judge in their favor).

I think @phelpswon't be happy about meeting Ukraine in the R16 in women's sabre after what happened with Kharlan. That can be one nasty draw for Italy. We got Poland instead of Ukraine, the team that almost beat us 4 years ago in the R16, Pusztai saved us there with an insane run at the end.

Ok so Kharlan qualified at the OG via special quota at least (it was suggested by our favorite Thomas Bach) :hyper:

I don't agree, in all sports we greet each other, it's a rule of respect, I find it sad that politics take over sport, which must be outside of all that.

it can't because Russians support putin and war in Ukraine. We cannot shake hands to people who financed missiles which killed our nation every motherf.cking day

these athletes have nothing to do with it, it's a bit easy to make this deduction..

Speaking personally, I would refuse a handshake after a match if my opponent hasn’t played by the rules or was verbally abusive to me or my team. I think respect is a mutual effort.

In terms of the actual incident in question, Kharlan did seem to acknowledge her opponent, which everything considered, is actually quite surprising.

I wouldn't be happy in any case, since our girls are normally so afraid to face Kharlan and take insane runs every time

however, I still think our team is much better than :UKR who basically can rely only on their superstar

    • Earlier today, Taiwan beat the USA    Of course it's car from the best US tram but it's still a big deal for Taiwanese baseball
    • And even here we lose to France? I really don't know what's the point of organizing the Olympics if you can't make progress in practically any sport. France has the Olympics in 2030 and there they will definitely prepare 100%, just like for Paris. We can't do that. It's obvious that in ski jumping we have no chance of winning medals, but decency dictates that we should at least win here with a France like that.
    • There is no snow in Lillehammer
    • Finally the ski jumping season begins 11 teams in the (real) mixed team competition, no Switzerland.
    • Most of our athletes are constantly bothered by something: the pressure to qualify, the miss of pressure when they have already qualified, etc. It's the same in football: at the beginning of the season they are a poor form becouse of a little played and at the end of the season they are tired. They are always looking for excuses. A real champion always plays at a high level, like Sinner, and doesn`t look for 1000 excuses for his poor performance.
    • Think it is mentally difficult for the two teams with the Olympic place guaranteed and the pressure off, whereas everyone else is absolutely playing at 110%.  I'm sure things will be better once they get to Milan.
    • There's no point in cheating, these were terrible European Championships for us. Retronaz out of form, Constantini with a huge number of big mistakes. Only illness can excuse it... We've probably lost the last 10 matches with Switzerland... It looks like Constantini had the tournament of her life in mixed doubles in 2022 in Beijing and she will never reach this level again.
    • What good is it to us if we took 4th place and lost an important match? If Constantini was sick, I forgive her, but I'm afraid that the Italian team will not exceed a certain level. Yes, they have made progress since 2022, but they lack that one decisive step to become a class team. Here we lost all important matches with teams at our/higher level: Sui x2, Sco x2, Swe. We only won with the one we were supposed to win with. I don't believe in a medal for this team in Cortina. After 2022, it seemed that Constantini could dominate women's curling, but it didn't happen that way. After Sinner's recent successes, I opened my eyes a bit and started to demand more from our athletes, coaches, and officials. I have no intention of being satisfied with 4th place, because with this approach, you won't achieve anything great.
    • play their best, but only get 1, so  get bronze 6-4!
    • Oh dear, once again a 50% shot from Constantini when she needed 100%.   blank the end & go into the 10th with the Hammer of Thor.
