The IOC only spared itself for a few years.by awarding the possibly two most ready cities back to back . But then what ?

Agenda 2020 failed, it didn't help bringing costs down. If anything, it allowed the games to grow even bigger with the host additional sports (339 events and 11,000+ athletes in Tokyo from a theoric cap of 310 event and 10,500 athletes).

For 2032, the issue will be kicking again with no next-to-ready hosts around. The games will once again comes with a massive high price, that probably no democratic country will be ok with.

Besides, I don't think that a regional bid (like the Ruhr region proposal) is the answer neither as the possible lesser sporting infrastucture costs will likely be eaten by the extra transportation and security costs.

I don't really see a way out tbf.

Well. It can give them time to find some kind of solution.

The actual candidacy phase is some 6 years away

Yes, they bought themselves some time. But that's it.

Time would have been enough indeed - if they whished so. But considering the auto congratulation we've seen yesterday. It's unlikely that anything major will happen between then.

My bet: Baku vs Shangai for 2032

I honestly think the time will come very soon, when the Olympic Games will be awarded to whole countries (or very big regions) instead of citys and smaller regions (like the Rhein-Ruhr area). It would be a pity, that all those different athletes wouldn't be able to live in the same Olympic village anymore, but I don't see many other possibilities.

Only speaking about Germany, because I don't know the situation in other countries, but theoretically, we have almost every sporting venue here, just in very different places. Transportation costs wouldn't be too expensive either, if it is spreat over the whole country. And I don't think the costs for security measures will be much higher than for example during a Football Worldcup, which takes place in a whole country as well.

Spring games ? (ie splitting the summer games in two)

2026 bidding doesn't look bad thus far, with :CAN Calgary, :SUI Sion, :NOR Lillehammer, :AUT Innsbruck as potential bidders (accoring to Wiki)

But then again, i don't believe in any Swiss bid... Or Norwegian.

Our sport minister speak about a possible italian-austrian bid. I haven't idea if it is only a political move or what.

The Innsbruck bid is in fact Innsbruck-Tirol, but so far it refers to Austrian citites of Seefeld, Kühtai and St. Anton am Arlberg as well as German Inzell. No word on Italy for now. On 15th of October there will be a referendum in Tirol during Austrian parlamentary election.

Adding to the list of @dcro there are also :KAZ Almaty, :JPN Sapporo and :TUR Erzurum interested in 2026 Olympics.

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
