:CAN defeat :NED 3-2! :cheer::cheer::cheer:

Well, finally we can congrat you @Josh. Really sad way to start the tournament for The Netherlands, but they were really choking in het 1st, 4th and especially 5th set. I expected a lot more, but in the end: we lost in recent months two times against Canada, so we have to admit Canada is really the better one now. Good luck in the rest of the tournament; I give Canada just a small chance to beat Serbia and China, but fighting spirit they have, so who knows!!

Yes, Netherlands may not have played their best game, but I have no doubt that they'll rebound from this loss. Wasn't exactly pleased with Canada's performance either, despite the win. Pissed off with our efforts during sets 2 and 3, we really struggled to kill the ball. Of course, it didn't help that Netherlands were on fire. Anyways, if we want to qualify for the Olympics, we'll need to play much better than we did today.

Best of luck to you as well :yes @CCB

I left the house at 10 - 13 in the 5th, and saw at my phone that the set ended at 13-15. Was not aware that the team came back, just to give it away again.

Good start for Canada. If we can get the win tomorrow against the Dominican Republic then we are looking good to meet our objective of maximizing our world ranking points.

Thing is, there's hardly a significant 'bouncing back' to a loss against any of the 'lesser' teams (no offense to Canada at all, with 'lesser' teams I mean every team that's not Serbia or China :p), and when losing against one of them, you'd basically have to beat not one, but both of the two top teams. Had the Netherlands won this, the exact same could have said about Canada of course, the Netherlands too is definitely one of those 'lesser' teams you really can't afford to lose to.

Presumably there is no scenario where :CAN can qualify for the Olympics now that they have lost to :DOM.

Realistically, if there a chance the qualifiers will not be :SRB :ITA :BRA :USA :CHN :TUR :DOM :POL :JPN :NED :KEN :FRA ? I don't know how swingy the world ranking system is and how realistic it might be for the top 10 to change between now and June.

Minor teams are eliminating each other. As they say, yesterday’s winners are today’s losers and vice versa.

I think a lot can happen between now and June. A few bad losses to lower placed teams (like Dominican Republic against the Chechs) and you lose many points.

Unless one of the minor teams (Germany f.I.) qualify, 10th place should be enough. NL and DR are currently 9th and 10th and have a significant cushion over Canada, of over 30 points. But yesterday has shown we are quite capable of losing the advantage over Canada.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
