The semi-final for the men's African continental cup has been released. The final should be tomorrow.

Wow, Sierra Leone!

I think it's a real pitty that we don't have tripartite places in beach volleyball (1 in each gender). There are a lot of small countries competing and the current qualification really doesn't allow small countries that have only 1 good team to qualify (like Vanuatu).

Looks like Tunisia already qualified. North Africa is now dominating everyone else even in this sport.

Thanks, it looks like the news at FIVB is one day late. It's not too surprising, northern Africa is pretty good in sports and with South Africa pulling out of continental qualifiers there are now even fewer nations which can stand against them.

  • 5 weeks later...

Just before the main round of the last tournament that gives points I have come to the following scenario on qualification via ranking:

Women

World Ranking (finish in top 15 secured): :BRA  :USA  :GER  :CAN  :NED  :AUS  :GER  :ITA  :POL  :SUI:CAN  :SUI  :ESP

Still to define 2 direct places plus the reallocated host quota due to Brazil already qualifying 2 pairs (the other one from 2015 World Championships). NOC's currently holding those places are (in order):  :USA  :CHN  :ARG There are 3 pairs from that can overtake them. Here's what the minimum they need to do in the last tournament in order to grab the last spot

:RUS  UKOLOVA/BIRLOVA: advance  to quarterfinals and that Chinese or Argentinian pairs don't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination.

:VAN  MATAUATU/PATA: finish in 4th place; Chinese or Argentinian pairs don't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination; Russian pair doesn't advance to quarterfinals,

:FIN  LEHTONEN/LAHTI: finish in 3rd place; Chinese or Argentinian pairs don't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination; Russian pair doesn't advance to quarterfinals; Vanuatu doesn't advance to semifinals.

Men

World Ranking (finish in top 15 secured): :BRA  :NED  :NED  :USA  :USA  :LAT  :ESP  :ITA  :POL  :ITA  :AUT

There remain (mathematically) 4 places plus the reallocated host quota due to Brazil already qualifying 2 pairs (the other one from 2015 World Championships). NOC's currently holding those places are (in order):  :RUS  :POL  :CAN  :GER  :GER  There are 2 pairs from that can overtake them. Here's what the minimum they need to do in the last tournament in order to grab the last spot

:MEX  VIRGEN/ONTIVEROS: advance to quarterfinals and that either BOCKERMANN/FLUGGEN or ERDMANN/MATYSIK (the German pairs) don't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination.

:CAN  BINSTOCK/SCHACHTER: finish in 3rd place; both German pairs don't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination; Mexican pair doesn't advance to quarterfinals,

A little correction on that very hypothetical occurrence:

:FIN  LEHTONEN/LAHTI: finish in 2nd place, if the Chinese pair doesn't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination; finish in 3rd place, if the Argentinian pair doesn't advance to the 2nd round of direct elimination; Russian pair doesn't advance to quarterfinals; Vanuatu doesn't advance to semifinals.

 VIRGEN/ONTIVEROS :MEX ARE IN RIO!!

Last time they we're so close, and now they achieve the result that sends them to the Olympic Games!!

Following today's results in Hamburg, the list of qualifiers by Olympic Ranking is like this (including reallocation of host quota):

Women

:BRA  :USA  :GER  :CAN  :NED  :AUS  :GER  :ITA  :POL  :SUI  :CAN  :SUI  :ESP  :USA  :CHN  :ARG

Men

:BRA  :NED  :NED  :USA  :USA  :LAT  :ESP  :ITA  :POL  :ITA  :AUT   :RUS  :POL  :CAN  :GER  :MEX

    • That was known from the start for  and will be planned for.   Sadly just the reality of sports in North America. Canada and the US are both huge, a flight from Vancouver to Halifax or from Seattle to Miami is north of five hours. Every sports league in North America has to deal with this kind of travel logistics on the regular, so none of this will seem particularly unusual to a North American player.
    • That’s not a long distance, it’s barely a 2h flight and there is no difference in timezone. Easily doable for fans as well.
