Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

Recommended Posts

and completely fresh breaking news

The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) Council will meet today to decide on actions against Russia and Belarus for a military invasion of Ukraine.

The Finnish portal iltalehti.fi has come up with information from a source in the IIHF, what decisions should be made today from 6 pm our time.

The IIHF Council should decide on taking off the 2023 Men's World Championship and the 2023 Junior World Championship from Russia, which was originally scheduled to organize it.

Also both :RUS  and :BLR are going to be kicked out from this May World Championships and should be replaced by Austria and France in Finland, both national teams dropped out of the highest division at the 2019 World Championships, and since then the 1st Division World Championships for the pandemic have not taken place.

This should also means Russia and Belarus will be by default relegated to Division I A for next year

PS: I think we should have a thread dedicated to the sports consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Yep the groups should be

A- (Helsinki):

Canada

Russia Austria

Germany

Switzerland

Slovakia

Denmark

Kazakhstan

Italy

B- (Tampere):

Finland

USA

Czech Republic

Sweden

Latvia

Norway

Belarus France

Great Britain

The only question which will remain is (if the IIHF council will confirm it tonight) if there will be any relegated team from the tournament, if no:

RUS and BLR would be able to return next year.

if there would be relegation: than RUS and BLR will be really retrograded to Division IA this year and since they will not be allowed to play they will be by default relegated to Division I B next year and so on...

The BBC are now reporting it so it is 99% true.

Considering that the Olympics are pretty far away, they can't really do more.

This all but assures Russia cannot qualify directly through the WR for the 2026 Olympics correct?

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
