5km walk? Bad idea. You couldn't enforce the rules at all and cheating would be common. Plus you throw the stamina factor out of the way completely.

Heats system. Either QF -> SF -> F, or 3 SF -> F. Maybe better over 2.5km

I think a 100m race walk would be awesome. I predict a lot of faults, however.

Also, I am very keen on a 100m sprint in cross country skiing. What do people think of this?

Iaaf should introduce a race walk from siberia to moscow next time, it will be the mother of all race walk events.
