so, Table Tennis loses the single gender team events, replaced by the mixed team event and there's also the comeback of the single gender doubles beside the confirmed mixed doubles

all of that, just to gift :CHN a few more free gold medals

Will Trump let them in? Decent chance he won’t.

Eh, not sure I agree. The team events are basically a free gold medal for China, so they are trading two free gold medals for one free gold medal and two likely gold medals. Doubles is a format where upsets are much more likely to happen than team matches.

Either way, I think from a spectator standpoint it is a win. The doubles tournaments will be much more interesting than the team tournaments were.

not to mention the football pure woke move...disgusting!

Given men's football is the one event in all of the Olympics where the best athletes aren't allowed to compete... not sure how this move is "pure wokism". The women's tournament is essentially a mini world cup, the men's tournament is a side show we tolerate because it generates ticket sales.

Would be a different story, of course, if the men's event wasn't a U23 competition that isn't even within a FIFA window.

As probably one of the biggest swimming fans on the forum, not too thrilled about stroke 50's being added. There's already enough events.

However, if it means that they're getting rid of semifinals for the 200m events, then that's a trade off I'll to take.

Ah yes, today was the dreaded "IOC news day"... As usual there is barely anything to smile at.

Men's boxing losing more weights is absurd, especially since their "gender parity agenda" is out of the window after switching the football.

Swimming getting the 50s in an already bloated program was sadly inevitable. With US and AUS the next hosts, I'm surprised swimming doesn't have 100 events to begin with.

All the new mixed stuff is Frankenstein as usual, especially the tennis and gymnastics. No one asks for these, even within these sports, but the IOC only care about "Let's have all the stars interact more with each other for maximum TV talk and social engagement, who cares about sporting traditions".

Climbing splitting the events is a positive, though for me personally I didn't see any problem with the combined. It actually showed the true overall best climbers, while now the specialists in one event will get more chances to sneak a medal.

Host sports with 6 teams are a joke and shouldn't award medals! Have them as exhibition events with a trophy etc. for the winners, but shouldn't be included in the medal table. But what do I know.

And still no news on the most important thing for me - extending the Games to 3 full weeks. Things will be crammed, crammed again..

Small thing there, men's boxing has the same number of events and athletes as in Paris. Women's boxing also has the same athlete quota, but with one more event now.

The mixed events needs to go. The soccer move was dumb too. Could have easily kept it at 12 across thr board and saved quotas

Might be wront because I'm transcribing while watching live (while also being on a work meeting)

  • 50m events in all strokes
  • 12 women's teams in water polo
  • Compound (!) mixed team event archery
  • 4x100m mixed relay in athletics
  • Mixed race walk relay removed :(
  • 12 teams in 3x3 basketball
  • 7 men's and women's events in boxing
  • Football will have 16 women's teams and 12 men's teams
  • Mixed team event in golf
  • Mixed artistic gymnastics team event (!)
  • Coastal rowing is three events (men's, women's, mixed double sculls), removing lightweight rowing
  • NO MORE COMBINED IN CLIMBING! Speed, boulder and lead are all different events
  • Mixed team event in table tennis (in addition to mixed doubles? O.o)
  • 10500 athlete quota only applies to core sports for LA
  • More women's quotas than men's quotas overall

I think you mean :cheer:

Well, having three events now in sport climbing is good, 12 teams in 3x3, and the quota only applying to core sports otherwise… :spank::bones: (mixed 4x100m relay, men’s/women’s doubles table tennis, and the 7/7 men/women boxing weights are fine I guess, I’m not a big fan of mixed events but I’m okay with it somewhat)

A compound mixed team event but no individual compound events? 50m strokes? Michael Andrew is probably pissing his pants with happiness right now. 12 women’s teams in waterpolo? Is there even enough teams to make it competitive? Mixed artistic gymnastics team event? Mixed team event in table tennis?

No. I’m unhappy they removed a race walk event (even though it def could have used some workshopping).

I’m guessing it’s going to be a very limited field, given this is taking away quotas from recurve. Very strange decision from the IOC, but from World Archery’s point of view it was likely the priority to get compound into the games in any form, even if it’s some weird eight team mixed event format.

I do prefer this to cuts that make the recurve event significantly worse. Though I do think the IOC should have just taken a pass on recurve if they weren’t willing to increase the athlete quota.

    • @bestmen Look, I've been reading your comments regarding Russia for quite some time, and I don't want to bite my tongue this time.   First, context matters. I agree with @copravolley. It’s not an insult to say that people who don’t live near Russia often underestimate what this war actually means for Europe. Out of the three of us, I can say with certainty that I feel the most directly affected by and concerned about this war.   In the same way I wouldn’t share my opinions on Africans and the conflicts on their continent, or lecture Palestinians about the war in Gaza, it’s reasonable to listen first when Europeans explain why this is not just a political disagreement that happens to block Russian athletes from competing, but an ongoing war of aggression that doesn’t only affect Ukraine, but also countless other countries located nearby with a long and dramatic history of communism and Russian influence. To make it clear, you're absolutely entitled to your opinion. However, you have repeatedly pushed the same narrative about the supposed injustice towards Russian competitors.   Second of all, the claim that Russian athletes have nothing to do with politics is blatantly wrong. It's a lie, and you know it. Countless Russians are actively supporting the crimes that Russia is committing on Ukrainian soil, advocating for further military operations, and show little to no remorse. Many Russians supported Putin throughout his presidential campaigns and continued doing so even after the invasion. Just look at their public statements made over the past three years. They are expected to align with the state’s narrative. That’s not an individual moral judgment, it’s how the system works.   Major Russian sports clubs are directly linked to or derived from the military. Hockey players wear war symbols and slogans on their jerseys, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Russian sports and politics are two sides of the same coin, closely related ever since the state began pouring money into centralised doping programs and sporting propaganda. Bringing up Netanyahu or Israeli doping is pretty much just whataboutism. If there is proven, systematic wrongdoing in sport, it should be addressed through proper investigations and sanctions. That does not magically erase or excuse Russia’s actions, nor does it justify pretending this war doesn’t exist when it becomes inconvenient.
