Single gender sports fail the gender equality requirement so netball is out unless they can rapidly fix their gender problem. World Netball not so long ago was refusing utterly to sanction men's international netball or even support the growth of men's netball so they kind of sabotaged themselves and are only changing courses out of self interest because Brisbane was awarded the Olympics.

 

It doesn't even make sense to propose Aussie rules given how poor the participation is outside of Australia.

If lacrosse can be selected then I don't see why Australian rules football can't be selected if they get Olympic sport recognition. Australia will obviously dominate, but there's enough other nations to make a tournament.

 

As for netball, a women's only event is still much more likely to be accepted than a men's only event. Australia and the netball federation can spin it as bringing equality to the number of men's and women's events (while obviously ignoring that there will be more women at the Olympics).

I think the biggest problem for Australian football is how big the roster size is.

 

Rugby League Nines might be a more realistic "out there" selection.

Given how tight they've gotten with awarding spots since imposing that 10,500 cap in particular I'm amazed how many non-core team sports they added for LA28. It got to be a bit of a nightmare in several sports for Paris, so unless they increase the cap, the core sports are going to have to cut back even further.

 

Would be nice if the IOC set one cap for the core sports, and gave the hosts latitude with the non-core sports. If they wanted to go nuts, let 'em, it's their money. If they let LA have Flag Football, I wouldn't rule out anything if Brisbane pushes hard enough.

I believe, the IOC has admitted the cap will have to be relaxed for 2028.

 

I think they will go with what you proposed. 10,500 for core sports plus some for extra sports

The big problem with Nines is that every attempt at a world competition has failed badly.

A World Cup in 2019 was not repeated again and a World Club tournament was abandoned 20 years years ago due to a lack of interest.

I'm not even sure the variant is played anywhere these days.

Additional Sports at Brisbane 2032

 

The final sports program for Brisbane 2032 can be reasonably expected in the first half of 2028, as occurred in 2024 when confirmation of the Los Angeles Olympics final sports program was announced.

 

Boxing

• While Boxing was “scheduled” from the next two summer Olympics, this sport is currently suspended from both LA2028 and Brisbane 2032 until a new governing body (World Boxing) can formally take over the management of the sport and run the competitions at the Games.
• At Paris 2024, the IOC itself ran the boxing competition as a one-off only.
• the previous boxing governing body (IBA) has been kicked out of the IOC family after an extended period of governance breaches.
• for LA2028, boxing may yet be added as a late includion.
• for Brisbane, I’m confident with the expected full approval by the IOC of World Boxing to govern the sport, Boxing will be re-instated at the Olympics and in 2032 is planned to take place at Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre.

 

T20 Cricket

Cricket is a hot favourite to continue at Brisbane 2032 following it’s debut at LA2028.

 

77 countries play T20 Cricket world wide according to the latest ICC World Rankings.

 

 

Flag Football

This sport is actually becoming very popular in Australia and also world wide.  There are 20 million players around the globe currently playing Flag Football.

 

So, I think it has a better than even chance of being continued at Brisbane 2032.

 

• Flag Football played in 100 countries, 20 million players world wide

 

• Australia embracing the rise of Flag Football

 

Lacrosse

This is another booming sport internationally.  

Australia is ranked 4th in the world in both women’s and men’s Lacrosse. It’s another sport which has a good chance to continue at Brisbane 2032.

 

Lacrosse was played in the Olympics in 1904 and 1908. It was a also a demonstration sport in 1928, 1932 and 1948. 

 

AFL Nines / Rugby League Nines

Both AFL and Rugby League I believe will really struggle to win a spot at Brisbane 2032.

 

The days of “demonstration sports” is long gone from the Olympics and I can’t honestly see either making it on to the final Brisbane 2032 program.

With both women’s and men’s teams, I think that Netball Fast5 (women’s and men’s) has got a fair chance for inclusion in 2032.

 

Fast5 women’s world series competitions have been played since 2009 with men’s teams included since 2022.

Incidentally, 50 countries currently play the regular Netball format with Australia ranked No. 1 in the world.

Do you mean lifesaving or surf lifesaving? The former is probably more likely because the latter really only has decent amount of participation in a few countries.

RL is as much an international sport as Lacrosse tbh (they both aren't). But really, after Paris and LA, trying to predict future hosts additional sports seems to me basically impossible. No one saw brealking or lacrosse coming.

The International Olympic Committee saw Lacrosse coming when the international sporting federation World Lacrosse made a detailed submission to the Olympic Programme Commission to have the sport included at the LA 2028 Games.

 

That’s what it will take if Rugby League wants to be included in the 2032 Games.  It’s not impossible but there is already Rugby Sevens in the Olympics and the question has to be asked is if the IOC is willing to add the sport of Rugby League to the Games? I don’t know.
 

On your point about Lacrosse, yes it is very much an international sport played around the world.  Recognition of this is that Lacrosse will officially be a medal sport at the LA2028 Olympic Games.

 

World Lacrosse has 92 member international Lacrosse sporting federations governed by across 4 continental sporting federations across the globe: 

• Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union
• European Lacrosse Federation
• Pan-American Lacrosse Federation
• African Association of Lacrosse

 

As mentioned, both the Australian Mens and Womens Lacrosse Teams are ranked number 4 in the world.

 

So back to Rugby League Nines which is really up against it for inclusion at the Olympics in 2032.

 

Yes, I get your point that we do not usually get to see the submissions made to the Olympic Programme Commission for inclusions of different sports.

 

Also, I don’t even know if Rugby League has ever put a submission in, or if they are planning to?
