Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Exactly. Belgium for example has 6 quotas on the mens side but only 2 skaters to fill in those 6 spots (Swings/Vosté). Czech Republic has 7 quotas on the womens side, but only 2 skaters who will normally fill in those quotas (Sablikova/Zdrahalova)

So on the womens side I foresee no issues, probably around 77-78 different skaters will fill in those quota. On the mens side, I think the total number will be around 87-90. That’s why I was wondering if they would use the unused quota from the women, but there is no rule about that.

They did it in short track... so I think it will happen here.

Basis on ISU qualification rules for Beiging in speedsaktind that says:

"

  1. The highest number of event quota places is 3 (in Men’s 500m) plus 5 other events having at least 1 athlete (1000m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m and Mass Start). This brings the total to 8. Thus for quota allocation purposes:

    • If the NOC also qualifies in the Men’s team pursuit, the NOC can be allocated up to 8 Men quota places.

    • If the NOC does not qualify in the Men’s team pursuit, the NOC can be allocated up to 7 Men quota places"

Do you think that maximum Nederlands men quota is 9 quotas or 9 skater for all the quotas earned??

The Netherlands can send 9 different men and 9 different women to the Olympics in speed skating.

And the main thing in Dutch speed skating is back, the quadrennial 'Matrix' :cheer: This decides who goes to the Olympics and is filled with results during the OQT. For example, if you're 3rd in the men's 1500m, you need to hope someone has doubled up in the first nine spots (which is of course likely). Second place in the 5000m and 10.000m are both definitely not sure, which is a bit of a unique situation in Dutch male speed skating. As for the women: it's an Irene Schouten matrix all the way in the top-3 :d

17 event quotas (3x 500m/1000m/1500m/5000m, 2x 10000m/Mass Start + team pursuit), but only 9 skater quotas, so a maximum of 9 different Dutch male skaters can go to Beijing to compete.

Today the national ice skating association (KNSB) has published how they will determine which 9 skaters will go. Once again, the Dutch association asked scientists from the University of Groningen to come up with these matrices. The matrix shows the selection order for the skater quotas, based on the distances on which the mathematicians believe the Dutch have the highest chance of earning a gold medal in Beijing.

The top 6 highest ranked skaters in the final matrix will always go. It is very likely that the 7th and 8th highest ranked skater will also go and that the national association will select the number 9th based on who they think is the best fit for either the team pursuit or the mass start and who is not already part of the top 8 skaters.

Selection order Men Women
1 #1 1.000m #1 5.000m
2 #1 5.000m #1 Mass Start
3 #1 1.500m #1 3.000m
4 #2 1.000m #2 3.000m
5 #1 10.000m #1 500m
6 #1 Mass Start #1 1.000m
7 #2 1.500m #1 1.500m
8 #1 500m #2 5.000m
9 #3 1.000m #2 1.500m
10 #3 1.500m #2 1.000m
11 #2 5.000m #3 3.000m
12 #2 10.000m #3 1.500m
13 #2 500m #3 1.000m
14 #3 5.000m #2 500m
15 #3 500m #3 500m

For example, if we fill in the matrixes based the results of the national championships that were held in the last week of October, then they would select the following skaters:

Selection order Men Women
1 Kai Verbij Irene Schouten
2 Jorrit Bergsma Irene Schouten
3 Thomas Krol Irene Schouten
4 Hein Otterspeer Antoinette de Jong
5 Jorrit Bergsma Jutta Leerdam
6 Bart Hoolwerf Jutta Leerdam
7 Kjeld Nuis Antoinette de Jong
8 Kai Verbij Sanne in 't Hof
9 Thomas Krol Ireen Wüst
10 Chris Huizinga Femke Kok
11 Patrick Roest Carlijn Achtereekte
12 Patrick Roest Jutta Leerdam
13 Dai Dai N'tab Ireen Wüst
14 Marwin Talsma Femke Kok
15 Hein Otterspeer Michelle de Jong
  • Green = 100% sure based on results during trials,
  • Yellow = very likely based on trials, but could potentially be replaced by another skater to improve the team pursuit/mass start team,
  • Red = will probably be replaced,
  • Black = not qualified based on trials, but can be manually selected by the national association.
  • Grey = also fills in a higher spot in the matrix, so this result doesn't count

So it’s not possible that Nederlands may rejected any quita for example un 500 m?

In theory, there is a chance, but in practice I don't see that happen, unfortunately for Nil Llop.

    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).

    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
