Final Men's team pursuit quotas:

:USA:NOR:CAN:NED:ITA:CHN

Qualified by time: ROC and :KOR

If this qualification system was the same in 2018 :DEN and :NZL would have qualified instead

I prefer this system then. Of course it would be nice to see Denmark and New Zealand in the Olympics, but Russia 100% deserves to be there after the weird disqualification because they showed slightly too much skin.

Not taking the quotas into account for the distances that will be skated tonight, we have a total of 25 countries already secured of at least one quota:

:ARG :AUT :BEL :BLR :CAN :CHN :CZE :DEN :GBR :GER :ITA :JPN :KAZ :KOR :LAT :NED :NOR :NZL :POL :ROC :ROU :SUI :SWE :TPE :USA

In 2018, 29 different countries competed. Differences so far:

  • No participation in 2018, but quota secured for 2022: :ARG :GBR
  • Participated in 2018, no quota secured for 2022 (yet): :AUS :COL :EST :FIN :FRA :HUN

:ARG will send its first ever skater to the Olympics (women's 500m) and no skater from :GBR had qualified since 1992 and now they qualified both a male and female speed skater. :cheer:

:EST Marten Liiv will almost certainly qualify tonight for both men's 500 and 1.000m, so Estonia will be the 26th country added to the list.

:FRA Loubineaud is now 2nd reserve on the men's 5.000m, 3rd on the men's 10.000m and 4th on the men's mass start. :wall:

No reasonable hope for any of the other countries to qualify. I'm most disappointed by :FIN. They also don't have any talents coming up in the junior circuit.

Victoria Rodriguez starts with this five years ago, leaving the skate race, she was totally alone without any help from the state, federation or sponsors.

Its really incredible her qualification.

This has to be an all time low for :FIN in speed skating. Kind of in line with the general decline of Finish winter sports.

Yea sadly it seems like there is decline across the board except in hockey... I wonder why

Maybe @Finnator123 can give an insight into this.

Maximum number of athletes per NOC:

Country Women Men Total
:NED 9 9 18
:CAN 8 8 16
:ROC 8 8 16
:JPN 8 7 15
:NOR 8 7 15
:CHN 8 5 13
:USA 6 6 12
:GER 5 7 12
:ITA 4 8 12
:KAZ 6 5 11
:POL 5 5 10
:BLR 8 2 10
:KOR 4 5 9
:BEL 1 6 7
:CZE 7 0 7
:GBR 2 3 5
:SUI 3 2 5
:AUT 2 1 3
:TPE 3 0 3
:DEN 0 2 2
:EST 0 2 2
:SWE 0 2 2
:ARG 1 0 1
:COL 1 0 1
:LAT 0 1 1
:NZL 0 1 1
:ROU 1 0 1

If all countries will use the maximum number of skaters, a total of 210 names will be sent to the IOC (108 women and 102 men), but the maximum number of qualification places is 166 (83 women and 83 men).

That should not be too much of an issue on the women's side as 77 different skaters won a quota for their NOC. On the men's side however, I expect that the quota of 83 is too little. I'm curious to see what will happen in that situation. According to the rules, it could lead to a reduction of event quota on the 500m, 1.000m and 1.500m.

@Benolympique

LOL. It's as if the ISU made a special 9-member team rule for the Netherlands and for the Netherlands only.
