Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Hope you understand I was joking ;) I know you guys love the field one a lot :yes

It is just for me always a mistery why they do not at least try to form a program considering they are the bets in speed skating for a reason, this is already a huge advantage in ice hockey. Really hard to understand :(

Yeah I know it was a joke :p But tell me one thing did you ever think the puck was way too small at any point in the life :p

It's fine in 4K :P

(TBH ice hockey is much easier to follow after having seen it in person)

I understand it might be difficult for new fans, but it's not really about following the puck itself.  You just need to follow the actions and reactions of the players to understand what's going on, and then depend on replays for close calls.

I realize this can be a disadvantage, but it's the cost of having a fast and hard-hitting sport.  Although I try to enjoy all team sports, it is sometimes excruciating to watch soccer (football) because stuff rarely happens, and when it does it's usually one and done.  The last 5 minutes of a basketball game takes approximately 853 minutes in real time which is ridiculous.  And don't get me started on American football.  47 seconds of action per full game.  Volleyball is fun to watch, though.

Dude, Kingsbury. Probably the biggest favourite for any individual men's event at these Olympics.

Also I'd def argue that collectively Canada was the favourite to win men's snowboard slopestyle, and the women's team pursuit was undefeated this season, and only Japan ever looked like a possible threat (really, to this day, not sure why anyone expected :NED to be competitive in that event).

Women's team pursuit: No, at least Japan was a bigger favorite.

Kingsbury: 1 billion percent he wasn't the biggest favorite. Maybe/probably the favorite, but he didn't even win the last world cup before the olympics.

Snowboard slopestyle: I think there were many gold medal contenders (McMorris, Parrot, Toutant, Su Yiming, Gerard, Kleveland), but overall a canadian gold probably seemed most likely.

Canadian men were probably/possibly favorite in snowboard slopestyle and moguls, but certainly not overwhelming favorites. Canada might have been expected to win 1 or 2 more golds, but i am not sure if it was reasonable to expect more medals overall. Canada won tons of surprising medals.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

oh man ! in opposite there were so many times in my life I cursed that the puck was too big :p

But yeah I understand your point. The sport is just too fast and physically demanding it may cause troubles to viewers to follow the puck/enjoy more the game, but once you get used to it, get that hockey IQ and can "read" better the game, it's easier and more fun to watch.

It is just the best sport on earth :d and I hope the 19th February will be the new slovak national holiday

At the end of the speed skating tournament, this is the final medal table.

Rank NOC Gold Silver Bronze Total 2022 Total 2018 Total 2014*
1. :NED Netherlands 6 4 2 12 16 23
2. :SWE Sweden 2 0 0 2 0 0
3. :CAN Canada 1 3 1 5 2 2
3. :JPN Japan 1 3 1 5 6 0
5. :NOR Norway 1 0 2 3 4 0
5. :USA United States of America 1 0 2 3 1 0
7. :BEL Belgium 1 0 0 1 1 0
7. :CHN China 1 0 0 1 1 1
9. :KOR South Korea 0 2 2 4 7 2
10. :ITA Italy 0 1 2 3 1 0
11. :ROC ROC 0 1 1 2 1 3
12. :CZE Czech Republic 0 0 1 1 2 2

* Mass Start was introduced as an Olympic event in Pyeongchang, therefore there were 6 medals less in 2014.

Some facts:

  • 8 different countries divided the 14 golden medals among them of which 2 Asian, 2 North American and 4 European countries. In both 2014 and 2018, there were only 5 different countries with at least one golden medal in speed skating.
  • All countries that won a medal in 2018 also won a medal in Beijing. Only :SWE is new in the list this time around.
  • :NED won only half the amount of medals they won 8 years ago.
  • These are the third consecutive Olympic Games in which :GER did not win a speed skating medal. They won 4 medals in Vancouver, 3 in Turin, and 8 in Salt Lake City.
  • :POL also hasn't won a medal since 2014 when they won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

And watch with commentary, it is more fun especially when the commentators are hockey specialists so you don't spend time to look for the puck every time

F that noise, the Winter Olympics don't have enough events. There was a bunch of dead air over the past two weeks. Bring on random new speed skating races, new Nordic events, Telemark, ice climbing, cyclocross, men's and women's doubles *and* mixed four person curling, snow volleyball, cross country running, 3 on 3 hockey, ice cross downhill, snow football and whatever else we can invent.

Ireland might approve of wok racing.

Yes, exactly.  As a hockey fan I don't really look at the puck, I look at the players.  Knowing the guy on the point has the puck doesn't really matter if you don't know/understand what the other guys on the ice are doing.  The only time we really focus on the puck is when crossing blue lines for offside, close icings or scrambles around the net.  But even then you're really looking at everything around the puck.
