Taekwondo Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

First round matches on Day 1 of Paris Grand Prix completed and have thrown up a couple of surprises with the women's 49Kg class becoming a bit of a bloodbath for the seeded athletes.

Women's 49Kg

:EGY Janna Khatab defeated 4th seed :MEX Daniela Paola Souza

:ITA Sofia Zampetti defeated 9th seed :FRA Lenya Kamkasoumphou

Milana Bekulova defeated 3rd seed :CRO Lena Stojkovic

:BRA Camila Bezerra defeated 6th seed :TUR Rukiye Yildirim

:CYP Kyriaki Kouttouki defeated 7th seed :ISR Abishag Semberg

Women's 57Kg

:TUN Chaima Toumi defeated 5th seed :IRI Nahid Kiyanichandeh - with 6th seed :TPE Lo Chia-ling advancing to Round of 16, that could see Kiyanichandeh dropping out of a ranking quota position.

Men's 58Kg

All of the main names made it safely through the first round, but there were a number of mid-table athletes who were beaten by lower ranked opponents.

meanwhile our Olympic Champion Vito Dell'Aquila is way, way far from recovering his mojo and a decent shape...he lost badly in the rd of 16 against the eventual champion from :IRI which is not a disaster in itself, rather than how he lost

our girls, instead, proved once again inconsistent, to say the least

after a good win against the odds in rd #1, they couldn't confirm themselves in the following match...as usual...:wall:

small consolation, the future looks bright, as we won 5 medals (2 golds) at the Cadets Worlds, which is quite unusual for us

Big result for Caden, who looks to be on a charge for a spot. Rebecca cannot be that far behind Bianca Cook either. Big loser this weekend may be Lauren Williams, if GB fillup the four quotas on rankings.

not a bad tournament for Iran, 4 medals from 7 athletes. finally a gold after some years. two golds actually. a bit upset that our coach didn't let 58kg final to happen. for the 2nd time in a row (after Rome GP semifinal) they asked/ordered Zandi to withdraw since the other guy has more ranking points.

officiating in Taekwondo is much better nowadays because it's mostly electronic system but still a bad/corrupt referee can change the outcome of the match by giving lots of cautions. and this Moldovan ref is doing this over and over. our +80kg outscored his opponent in the QF by something like 20pts difference but still lost the match. it's taekwondo, not Sumo, you can't allow someone to simply push his opponent out of the court and win matches by cautions.

btw while I still don't give up on winning Olympic quotas by the World ranking, but at the moment only 1 is in the qualification zone :( and there are only few tournaments left. we missed most of 2022 tournaments and now it's a bit late to collect points.

Cunningham has probably had the strongest summer of all the British fighters - with back to back victories at the European Games and the Rome Grand Prix. My back of a fag packet calculation suggest that his silver medal in Paris will see him move up into 4th place in the world ranking and will put him into an Olympic qualifying spot. If - and it is a big if - he can stay healthy over the winter, and gets a decent draw, he's going to be in the mix for a medal in Paris.

Lauren Williams had a decent result this weekend compared to her recent performances and she came very close to getting through to quarter finals so I think she'll take a lot of positives away from the competition particularly if she feels she is back to full fitness. She's currently about 80 points shy of a quota spot so she has a pretty steep mountain to climb but it isn't impossible - a lot will come down to whether she is going to go chasing the points at the various G1 level events through the early autumn. If she does go to the lower-level tournaments, it's not inconceivable that it could all come down to her performance in the Grand Prix Final in Manchester - but unfortunately I think she is going to come up short and miss out on Paris.

Not sure what the story is with Bianca Cook this summer - think she has been nursing an injury and hasn't competed since the European Games. Her inactivity has seen her drop to world number 3 whereas McGowan has quietly been going about business and racking up the wins with bronze at Rome Grand Prix and now silver in Paris. If the selectors were meeting this month, I think the nod would go to McGowan.

Think it is likely you'll still end up with 3-4 quotas - you've got 1 through the world ranking but Iran is one of the few nations who are also in the mix for the Grand Slam Champions Series and you have the Continental Qualifiers so overall not a bad position to be in.

Iran gets one via ranking in W57 for sure. Still with a chance in M58, and a tiny but not likely in M80. @MHSN

L. Williams has no chance in my opinion. She is about 70 points behind 5th place, that is too many points.
