Wut? 5 years ago it was overrun by far-leftists instead of the loud (but I think still in the minority) culture-warrior "right" contingent of the present day?

So the political compass swung from one end to the other?

The number of posts in the Political Thread has decreased dramatically ever since Biden became President. The left-wingers achieved their goal and are sitting quiet and keep their fingers crossed this honeymoon period lasts forever :p

Just to add to the cauldron lighter conversation…

I think Osaka is a fine choice, but it would have been even better is she was paired with Hideki Matsuyama. Two modern Japanese sporting icons coming together in a show of equality, resilience, and excellence. That’s just my two cents on the topic though.

I think it would have been better to choose someone famous for playing sport rather than someone more famous for NOT playing sport.

Parade of Nations, I enjoyed, I´ll always enjoy, so sad we´ll miss one NOC this time ( :PRK )

Sadly, there will forever be a Moscow or Los Angeles style asterisk beside all the medals won here. :shame:

Neah, it's the same for everyone. No need for asteriks. Montreal 1976 was boycotted by 20+ African countries and nobody gives a damn about that anymore.

I'm only second guessing the Japanese public . Maybe I'm wrong -think there will be a lot of comment about this  in the next few days

I very much  doubt that those sackings of key people would  be Japanese initiated  -they were leaned on by Westerners especially the Americans .

I'm sure the Osaka choice will be applauded by the New York Times , NBC and all that crowd  ( the ones who love "Imagine  " ) What the people here think is neither here nor there

Yes I do have a problem with Eurocentrism and European condescension towards others .

( I didn't know the abbreviation of Japan was JPN  )

To which the appropriate solution is not that you too insult whole countries, regions, and peoples (sadly I cannot qoute here all those instances because a good number of your posts have been removed because of this very readon)

Woke olympics :wall:

I thought the whole annoying use of the word 'woke' (usually meant in a bad way) was reserved for angry Twitter people and such

Well, crap.

I think Osaka was a really bold choice as final torchbearer. I definitively appreciate that.

Not exactly bold. Everyone knows she and Matsuyama will be the faces of these Games for Japan :dunno:

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
