  1. Thank you for the link. Very poor field in women's artistic gymnastics too, except for Russia, Japan and Italy. All the other teams are average at best. Surprisingly, Indonesia has a decent gymnast (Rifda Irfanaluthfi) who could seriously win a medal. How awesome would that be? The men's side is slightly better when it comes to good teams, with Russia, Ukraine, Japan as the top teams. Mexico, Chinese Taipei, Turkey and Uzbekistan have some good gymnasts too.
  2. Keep an eye out in gymnastics. It's not impossible for Saeid Reza Keikha to challenge for a medal if he qualifies. Winning medals in gymnastics at the Olympics is easier than at the World Championships, in my opinion. You have a smaller pool of gymnasts competing at the Olympics, so any mistake from the big names can drastically increase chances for smaller nations to win medals. This is what happened to Ude from Croatia in 2008, and with all three medalists from Brazil in 2016.
  3. Now, I'm curious about the disciplines. Two in trampoline, one in artistic gymnastics and one in trampoline, or two in artistic gymnastics?
  4. I found the original file on FIG's website. I'm baffled at how poor the competition in rhythmic gymnastics is going to be. Italy will send Alessia Russo, of all people! What the hell? Soldatova, Zeng, Meleschuk and Pazhava are the only top notch gymnasts, while Evchik, Moustafaeva and probably Gergalo and Budginas could challenge for medals. Russia seems not to care about this competition anymore. Since 2013 they only send their B/C level gymnasts, except that Mamun actually became the Olympic champion but no one would ever say that in 2013, and even Russia thought she was second-rate. I love Soldatova, but this probably is the last nail in her coffin regarding her chances for an Olympic spot.
  5. Thank you, but I the link is not working.
  6. Do we have a list of gymnasts?
  7. Artistic gymnastics and group rhythmic gymnastics are empty. We barely have 5 women and 5 men who are healthy and competitive enough right now in artistic gymnastics, so why the suspense? The group in rhythmic gymnastics not being decided is understandable because they are trying different combinations and severely increasing the difficulty, but artistic gymnastics should be a no brainer. And finally Thiago Monteiro was not selected for the table tennis team. I always complain whenever he is included, but the thing is he always earned a medal. Now it looks like he has finally called his quits, and I'm okay with that. Bring on the new guys (though Jouti is not really new, but this competition will be a great experience for him).
  8. Here are some statistics about the European Games in all gymnastics disciplines (not just artistic gymnastics). At the 2015 European Games, 20 nations earned at least one medal in gymnastics. At the 2019 edition, 8 more nations earned medals for the first time (Armenia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden). In total, 28 nations earned at least one medal in gymnastics out of 50 participating countries. This means 56% of the nations which have took part at the European Games achieved at least one medal result in gymnastics. This is a much bigger number compared to other continental Games, especially considering that there have been only 2 editions of the European Games. Event First held Number of editions with events in gymnastics Participating nations (including defunct teams) Nations which earned at least one medal in one of the gymnastics disciplines Percentage of medalists in gymnastics European Games 2015 2 50 28 56% Asian Games 1951 (gymnastics events since 1974) 12 50 13 26% Pan American Games 1951 17 42 13 31%
  9. He has slowly but steadily improved over the years. Now he is a real challenger for a medal at Worlds, especially considering he got 14.4 today with a couple of noticeable mistakes that he can (and probably will) eliminate until World Championships come.
  10. It is. He could very well challenge for a medal at the World Championships.
  11. And the surprises keep on coming in gymnastics. Wow!
  12. HUGE surprises in gymnastics today, so far. It's like everyone who had bad luck before these Games finally had a good day in their lives. I'm especially happy for Belak and Alistratava.
  13. Diogo had a very noticeable mistake that cost him 0.3, so the result was fair. To be honest, I didn't expect a medal at all for Diogo on rings, let alone a silver medal. Congratulations to Felix Dolci and Canada! And, yes, the expectations are quite different between men and women. The finalists on rings all had difficulty scores that ranged from 4.4 to 4.8, while at the senior World Championships the finalists all have difficulty scores between 6.1 and 6.5.
  14. Finally, Varinska! Finally! Yeees!
  15. Wait, what? Ude is a medalist at the Olympics and Worlds on pommel horse, okay. Seligman won a couple medals at the European Championships on pommel horse, okay. But Moznik and Srbic were world medalists on horizontal bar. Besides, there's nothing wrong with being good in one or two apparatus.
  16. I see what's the point of your comment (acrobatic gymnastics), but I guess no one expected Belarus to win two gold medals in this disciplube. Also, amusingly, Belarus has never won an international medal in aerobic gymnastics in any event (at least that I know of).
  17. Surprising (and some confusing) results so far in the women's competition. Ukraine had a couple of great routines which received low scores, while Belgium had average to mediocre routines and received very generous scores. The US girls in second was also kind of surprising. Not because they deserved to be first -- they definitely did not, since the Russians were fantastic. But the surprising part is Russia finally hitting their routines. It will be a very interesting battle from 2021 on when Biles retires. As I wrote before in another thread, without Biles the US is not unbeatable, at all.
  18. There's a big difference between men's and women's artistic gymnastics when it comes to the age that the gymnasts reach their peaks. Junior male gymnasts (16-17 years old) are still far from their peak form, since men usually peak around their early to middle twenties. Junior female gymnasts (14-15 years old) are very close to the peak form (16-18 years old) and some of the junior girls are better than the senior women. That being said, the level in men's competition was good. Japan is way ahead of the rest of the field as a team, but we could see some very surprising individual results, especially with the South Korean boy on floor and Kovtun on pommel horse (even though he fell, apparently) and parallel bars. But don't watch this event expecting to see the next Olympic champion in men's gymnastics. This is not going to happen. Maybe in 2024, but certainly not 2020 (unless we're talking about Japan's men's team). I expect the women's competition to be much closer to the level we see in senior events. Given the results at the European Games (especially women's floor) I believe the junior worlds will be a lot better.
  19. Very surprising bronze medal for Italy in the team competition! Congratulations!
  20. Great! For once, I'll not be ranting alone in the AG thread!
  21. Cuba has chosen their Pan Am team. MAG: Randy Leru, Rafael Rosendi, Alejandro De la Cruz, Ariam Vergara, Huber Godoy WAG: Marcia Videaux, Yesenia Ferrera, Mari Adny Morffi, Caridad Rodriguez, Vaneza leliebre I never heard about any of the guys, except for Leru who should win at least one medal (horizontal bar). Videaux is strong on vault, and in the absence of Rebeca Andrade and Alexa Moreno, she is a nice fit for a medal on vault (though not gold this time). Ferrera is the one that surprised me. She is very strong and can spoil the plans for individual medals for Brazil and Canada (and Mexico, probably, especially Nicolle Castro).
  22. Yes! Finally a major medal for Luba Golovina!
  23. Boring. Only 20 years after Turin. Anyway, I don't care about Winter Olympics anyway, and this is not going to change my mind either, so...
  24. In a good day, Canada could probably beat this team, especially if the US girls have a bad day on beam like the 2011 team had. Of course the US girls are the favorite for the gold medal, but in all honesty they are not out of this world when Biles is not part of the equation. Edit: I believe Flávia Saraiva could win floor. It will not be easy, but it would not be impossible either.
  25. Very boring results in rhythmic gymnastics. Just when I thought we were going to have a little more diversity, the old powerhouses swept the medals. The only "surprise" here was Ashram finally hitting her routines. Two gold medals is a fantastic result, especially after a very disappoint performance at the European Championships. I know this is only the second edition of the European Games and it's too soon to tell, but I still can't see how gymnasts can benefit from this event. We've had a very crowded year with lots of events in rhythmic gymnastics (5 world cup stages, 6 grand prix stages, the European Championships), so this event feels completely unnecessary. Why create and event with only 12 gymnasts and let only 6 of them compete in the finals? This makes no sense.
