judging has been a bit weird and biased, if you watch the failed dives from russians, canadians, brits you see they still get 6.00 or even 7.00!! compared to other nations (including Mexico) that if misses a dive or an entrance and the string of 5 or below shows with no mercy

For me it's kind of odd we will have quantity but maybe not that efficiency in quality (specially in synchro events) so this time a medal could be up for mexican team with 10m platform if Willars/Balleza are selected though I think Garcia closed the deal taking the silver here. If we have a diver in the top 8 and an olympic diploma in each event I will be satisfied. There is potential for this to be achieved.

Glad we have a FULL TEAM qualified for the Olympics I guess first time since since the synchro events are contested Congrats to Spain for two spots!!! it's kind of a payback since they were close in the synchro but did not make it there Ruvalcaba taking a spot for Dominican Republic, good for him though would be fair if he lived and trained there not in Mexico And Canada grabs a spot here after all the problems they had, so the olympic dream for Gagne will be alive

Totally off, not in shape, he looked like he only went to Tokyo to kind of feel the experience and said at least he had the opportunity to be at the Olympic pool once. Wont qualify to the final and that is a mediocre and unacceptable performance from him, the only mexican who did not advance to the semifinals, kind of spoils the party Rodrigo Diego, well kind of hot and cold during prelims The 3m event for Mexico is not on a high note right now, can't really say we have a real contender except Celaya but only IF he has a good day

Randal Willars delivering on the big stage, of course chinese were not present here but this is an excellent result for the 19 year old with the Silver Medal and improving overall with his consistency, he got better piked position during his execution of the dives in C, and got +90 in three rounds, his only mistake was with a 70 points score. If nothing strange happens he has to be at the Olympics, would love to see a duo of teenagers with him and Kevin Berlin (2019 Panamerican champion) though Berlin's condition and situation is unknown, I have to say that Kevin has more pure raw talent than Randal BUT lacks (in hiw own words) discipline. Overall a good final with the new up and coming youngsters saying we are here, the canadian duo if consistent will be a big medal threat maybe not at Tokyo Games but watch out for them starting next year and coming Paris 2024

With al these divers competing for the first time internationally in like a year or so, I wonder how the australians will look when they compete at THE OLYMPICS as their first competition in like 2 years?? I think they could suffer a lot from that, I think they should have sent a team to the World Cup but it looks the australians are taking very restrictive measures regarding Covid

And one brit diver just withdraw Mexicans looking Okay, Gabriela Agundez 4th round dive scoring 79 and sitting third entering the final round, the quota is almost a lock The other girl is clearly right now our third ranked diver or even 4th nationally when you put in the mix Alejandra Orozco and the promising teenager Maria Jose Sanchez

2 hours and we are in round 4 of 6 my God, this is it for me At least Randal has been very consistent just his fourth round dive gave him a bit of problem but I can see him qualifying to the semis and getting the olympic quota, unless some bizarre thing happens but since almost everybody is missing dives and having a rarher poor performances I think Randal just needs average dives in round 5 and 6 and he is in, already have enough cusion

Mexican Olympic Commitee already published that Aranza got a spot for the Olympics for Mexico Though after the embarassment with them in figure skating saying that Donovan Carrillo did not qualify to the Olympics just to find out days later they did not even care to read the rules from the begining and get assured that he was surely qualified, I wont take them that seriously LOL

Fencing CPE American Olympic Games Qualifier 2021
Braulio replied to Totallympics's topic in Fencing
Cuba once a powerful nation wining olympic medals to not even qualifying a single fencer to the Olympics -
Very impressive time for Tonatiu, I think he has great potential and hopefully this is not his peak of the season

Orozco/Agundez paid the price of the inexperience lead position after the preliminaries, it sure looked that they were very nervous from the start and never gained momentum as they had throughout the preliminaries. What a shame, they were very good there but totally the opposite in the final, glad and lucky us that every team (except Canada) had a disaster dive and Mexico still with a subpar performance sneaked and took that final quota but why? why we do have this mental issue? it's very common to our diving team and it has been a problem since forever, even Fernando Platas had this issues back then until that 2000-2001 final years of his career. At least they qualified to the games and with an 8 team field and maybe, maybe the nerves not there as Mexico will most likely dive first in the final in Tokyo they will compete with less presure and gave a performance similar to the one they had during the preliminaries at this event. I did not watch the Men's 3m synchro event but 8th place for Castillo/Celaya is nothing to celebrate, I don't get why Yahel was doing it after failing a dive, his preliminay performance was nothing to be very proud of. The duo have more than 3 years of experience together but it didn't show yesterday.

Ivan Garcia was less inconsistent than at the preliminaries, so the duo looked a bit better, Randal kind of felt a bit nervous in my opinion in the final but it's kind of understandable now as a real 'senior' diver. They have consistent dives only the first compulsory dive gave them problems but we know that mexican divers perform poorly during the first two rounds and then rack up points with their high degree of difficulty program, today they had the highest of them all. The 4 dives with no limit of DD ranged above 74 points and one scored 81 points if I remember correctly. So this time they were consistent but yet given the high DD they did not scored that well with 7.5 - 8.0 average in synchro. Randal was the better executing and Ivan had his usual mistakes and dirty entrances. Right now it is clear he is not in the best shape and form and with less than 3 weeks for the mexican olympic trials I don't know how he can qualify if others show better things. Though I can see the federation sending him with Randal no matter what. One thing is clear: right now this silver medal though is a good result you have to put your hopes not that high, it is a result that you have to consider many things like that the mexican pair did not execute and got the highest points given the high DD so they underperformed. Today everybody failed one or two dives, just ask Germany who missed the olympic spot. Teams like Canada & Korea failed a dive even though the have less Degree of Difficulty but were still close to Mexico. Ukraine even with a 3.0 and 3.2 dives in their program was very close to Mexico with dives as high as 3.8 Russia & China couples who will be at Tokyo Olympics, did not attend the event Great Britain is very very distant, their program is incredible difficulty and great/clean execution. At the Olympics; Mexico could be in the mix for a medal (a bronze most likely) but they need to make great improvement with solid/clean execution something I don't see getting from Garcia. I can see China, Russia & Great Britain again at the podium in Tokyo, though all the 5 other teams will be very very close between them.

With Todorov as President of the Mexican Aquatics Federation I seriously doubt it though I hope his days are counted and finally goes away As a mexican I hope the best for Willars/Garcia in order to get the spot but given the wrongdoings and dirty process within the Federation I wont mind if in the end karma strikes even if it's in detriment of our divers

I agree in almost everything you pick @mrv86 and I am very intrigued about the new pairing of Garcia/Willars. I was surprised that Randal was not paired with Diego Balleza, well Balleza (Universiade Gold Medalist in 2019 and World Champion in Team Event at 2019) is not even in the team, why? I would love to know! what is the reason behind this odd new pairing, also where is Kevin Berlin? Panam Champion in 2019 individual and synchro with who? Garcia. It's like Ivan Garcia was going to be on the team for the olympic qualifier YES no matter what so they just paired with Randal who is our best prodige in recent years to justify his inclusion. Garcia is in a relationship with Paola Espinosa who is a very good and close friend with Ana Guevara who is in charge of the Sports Comission in Mexico.

It's a bit complicated with so many divers there individually. The top 18 of those not already qualified to the Games will get the quota, so basically anyone who get to the semifinals will have a spot for Tokyo. About Polish chances, in the synchro they have very little hope. Individually I think Poland can get one in the Men's 3m springboard
