Nickyc707 reacted to Makedonas in Athletics Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Agreed, plus some people didn't have chances to compete much in 2020 and underachieved then (if they even competed at all!)

But typical of why Australia always has such an inflated Olympic team in relation to other countries. ?

Nickyc707 reacted to SalamAkhi in Mountain Bike Cycling Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games
I think no one has mentioned it yet but this race within the race could prove to be very important to the Olympic race in itself ...
As we speak is 32nd in the rankings and therefore will not earn any spot thanks to it, whatever Tom Pidcock does in NMNM. So Pidcock, a man we can consider as a top notch outsider for the medals, even the title, is currently out of the Games.
But, if Dascalu should repeat this top 20 and overtake Slovakia in the process, then Romania would be qualified via the rankings, thus releasing its U23 2019 WC quota (earned by Dascalu), which would transfer to the next athlete in this race from a non already qualified country ... Both the Jamaican and Irish divers are from Yorkshire. Yona Knight has Jamaican and Barbadian parentage so could have competed for any of three countries. He used to train alongside many of the top British divers in his home city of Leeds. I don't know whether he still does so.

Nickyc707 got a reaction from Matej in Diving FINA World Cup 2021
I think a reasonable rule of thumb is that where a country qualifies a synchronised team one of the pair is also likely to be competing in the individual events. GB has secured the maximum number of quotas available and although they brought 15 divers to this event to cover the 16 places I expect that they will likely select a team of 12/13 divers with some competing in both the individual and synchronised events.

Goodbye to basketball and table tennis as well where we know the US and China are going to be gifted the gold medals. ?

Nickyc707 reacted to rajiv in Which of these indigenous but popular sports would you like to see in Olympics?
Bowls and Netball are the regular Commonwealth Games sports not in the Olympics
They are both 5 continent sports ( which is more than a few of the existing Olympic sports can claim )
I note that triathlon and rugby 7s were firstly Commonwealth Games sports which were later Olympic sports

I believe GB Snowsports is working with F1 outfit McLaren to improve their performances across all the Olympic and Paralympic snow disciplines. Engineer Tom Stallard - a former Olympic rower - has been working on things like aerodynamics, waxing and bindings. It maybe that this is beginning to show fruit.

Nickyc707 reacted to dcro in European Games 2023
Agreed. Plus, replacing European Championships with European Games would likely mean reduced participation in all sports with various qualification systems in place. I don't think anyone really wants that.
Sure, using qualification systems works for the Pan American Games, but that's because the depth of nations there is so much shallower.

Which is why trying to build on the European Championships concept makes more sense. The truth is we don't need a European Games but the powers that be wanted to bring Europe into line with the other continents. The individual sport's European championships are very competitive and successful in their own rights so why would the governing bodies want to relegate them to the European Games?

Nickyc707 reacted to intoronto in Great Britain National Thread
A simple google search would show there are many ski resorts/courses in the Uk. Its serious enough of a sport, that it won the same amount of medals India won in Rio, an event with more than double the events. I would focus on your country first, arguably the worst sporting nation, before commenting on others.
