  1. Yeah, at best the IOC needs to hope that the vaccine is open to the general public ASAP. Which could be the case for many major nations by summer.
  2. The women’s water polo tournament at the 2020 Olympics has been decided with the results of the Women’s Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament. The two finalists of the eight-team tournament qualified to the games. The format included a round robin group stage where all eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals. The event was held in Trieste, Italy from January 19th to January 24th 2021. A draw between the Netherlands and Italy (7-7) saw the two nations finished atop of Group A with five points each. With a better goal differential, it was Italy who finished first in the group. Third place was won by France who fought off a second quarter comeback by Slovakia to win the match 17-9. Group B came down to Greece and Hungary as the two nations had back-to-back victories over Israel (20-1 and 27-2 respectively) and Kazakhstan (13-5 and 23-6 respectively). In the deciding match, it was Greece which finished with an 8-5 victory. The third-place match of the group between Israel and Kazakhstan ended in a 7-7 draw and thus the latter finished ahead due to goal differential. The quarterfinals saw no upsets as the four European powerhouses dispatched their opponents. The Netherlands defeated Kazakhstan 19-6, Greece won over Slovakia 22-3, Hungary finished ahead of France 20-7 and Italy was the victor over Israel 15-6. The semifinals and the Olympic qualification deciding matches saw Greece take an early lead over the Netherlands where they held a 4-3 advantage at half-time. However, the Netherlands were able to prevent Greece from scoring again as they won the match 7-4. The second Olympic quota was won by Hungary who took a 3-1 first quarter lead over Italy and thanks to a six-goal effort by Rita Keszthelyi, won the match 13-10. The final and bragging rights was won by Hungary who defeated the Netherlands 13-11. Third place went to Greece as they won over Italy 10-4. This will be the Netherlands’ first Olympic appearance since winning the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. The team will be hoping to repeat that performance at the 2020 Olympics. Hungary on the other hand, will be looking to win their first Olympic medal after finishing fourth at the previous three Olympics. This completes the Olympic roster for the women’s water polo teams. The final men’s teams will be decided at their respective Olympic qualification tournament scheduled to be held in February. Qualified Nations Women's Tournament Hungary Netherlands
  3. I agree, we have chances in all four sports. I may be underestimating baseball since Canada is pretty strong once you exclude MLB players (which I imagine is what will happen at the qualifiers). We won two golds and a silver over the last three Pan American Games.
  4. As of now the other teams have accepted the quotas so unless a team decides to withdraw the roster is set.
  5. Canada needs one more team sport to tie our record of nine (when we hosted the 1976 Olympics). We have four opportunities remaining (men's baseball, basketball, football and water polo). If we can assemble our best team we'd have decent chances in basketball and football, but that's unlikely (especially since the NBA started its season later).
  6. That's the point, the IOC is creating a situation where nations don't want to host the Olympics because of these requirements when in reality almost everyone is watching the games on a screen.
  7. The stadium capacities are another big issue. If the IOC was willing to halve the stadium size my metro area would be able to host the Olympics with only needing to build sport specific stadiums. If they want more ticket sales they could always install viewing areas or even theaters.
  8. The IOC would have to share a significant portion of the media rights for Japan to agree to that.
  9. That kept them safe until the IOC decided to investigate on an events basis rather than just sport. Of course the reality is as long as the current nations remain viable the sport should be safe (unless the IOC wants to get rid of 1000+ athlete quotas for some reason).
  10. And with the IOC looking to cut quotas everywhere water polo (with no ex-Yugoslavia nations) would look quite enticing
  11. Pretty much, if is wasn't for the ex-Yugoslavia nations adding some depth, I imagine there would be quite the push to get rid of water polo.
  12. While I agree France would be the favourite, I'd give those teams a decent chance at winning. At the 2015 and 2017 World Championships (the only recent ones France has competed in) they went 1-1 with New Zealand.
  13. While France may be currently a step above the other European nations, they would have a tough match against the other non-top 10 nations (Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand) for the final hypothetical spot in a 12-team tournament where one of the top 10 nations is the host.
  14. To be fair, Tahiti is part of France. It'd be like when Hong Kong hosted equestrian events at the 2008 Olympics except French Polynesia doesn't have their own NOC.
  15. A 12-team women's tournament won't be too bad in terms of quality. The bigger issue is due to the lack of depth, we'll get the same 11/12 teams for the foreseeable future.
  16. It likely comes down to how quickly the vaccine is administrated in Japan. At the very least, if they are going to allow foreign spectators they may force them to be vaccinated before entering the country. We'll know one way or another by the end of March/beginning of April.
  17. I agree, but you could run into a scenario where in the last match one team is qualified and thus doesn't play as hard.
  18. With South Africa deciding to take the African quota for the first time ever the final qualification tournament has become as tough as ever for the European nations despite there being two extra teams at the Olympics this year. I guess it's slightly easier with no Canada, but still two good teams will miss out.
  19. Hey, how is everyone doing. It's been a while and it seems a lot has changed since I've last been here.
  20. That's still a preference, "I'd rather compete for Ukraine, because I have a better chance to move my career forward." Regardless, we won't be able to classify all athletes is my argument. Some people have strong ethnic ties, others have ties to where they were born while others would compete for whoever gives them the best option.
  21. I don't think there's a way to split medalists from former nations. Would an ethnic Russian living in Ukraine during the USSR compete for the former or latter? It comes down to the preference of the athlete so we can never know.
  22. I think it was more to clarify that people born in 1997 would still be eligible to compete.
  23. Most of them are non-Olympic sports. Based on that list athletics, swimming and taekwondo may have it tough (at least among athletes that will compete at the Olympics)
  24. If Oceania nations participate then Australia and New Zealand will battle for gold. Even if they don't compete I'd take Fiji/Samoa over anyone from Asia.
