    With Russia’s ongoing ban I’m a little surprised at least one of hasn’t suddenly gotten very good at biathlon, cross country skiing, figure skating and/or ice hockey.

    I think this has less to do with reducing quota and more about making the event program the same for men and women. But they could also just replace the women’s 25m pistol with a 25m rapid pistol.

    At this point it would be hard to see them included, given there’s been no real progress in Russia being reintroduced in sports (and also no meaningful progress towards an end of the war).

    I disagree with Fontana being the only possible choice here, Wang Meng was absolutely dominant in her 2006 and 2010 wins, would have been a contender again in 2014 but for injury and also has accomplished much, much more than Fontana in world championships (Fontana has never won the world championships over 500m, while Meng has won it six times). The only blemish on Meng’s career is that she never came back after her ankle injury.

    I feel like not having the shooting events separated by gender is actually pretty reasonable? In Paris the gold medalist of the women’s event had a higher final score than the gold medalist in the men’s event in the 50m rifle and the 10m pistol (and multiple women had high enough scores to make the men’s final). Olympic shootgun shooting used to be open and it was fine. Also think of the bright side: no more mixed team events in shooting!

    The only reason I’m alive today is because a nurse once injected with epinephrine. It isn’t something I recommend people do under most circumstances, but it will in fact save your life if you’re having anaphylactic shock. The rules are just different in emergency situations. The US did a big stimulus in 2008 and during COVID. Most of Europe did not. The results speak for themselves. It’s less that state spending creates prosperity (it doesn’t), rather that state austerity in a time of crisis will grind long term growth to a halt.
