  1. Jacques Audiard winning an Oscar for Emilia Pérez (even though it's "just" in best song) is very hard to stomach. He did not deserve to be rewarded for a movie that was offensive and, even worse than that, boring.
  2. I was already expecting Anora to win best picture going in, but at this point giving the editing win it's hard to see how anyone else wins.
  3. Worth mentioning that Flow is the first ever Oscar win for a Latvian film!
  4. My ranking of best picture nominees: I’m Still Here Dune Part 2 Anora Wicked The Substance The Brutalist Conclave A Complete Unknown Nickel Boys Emilia Pérez Of those I loved 1 through 5, I liked 6 through 8, I respected (but didn't like) 9 and I have nothing good to say about 10.
  5. Well ya. It’s just very common that some countries have their best athlete in a sport other than alpine skiing or cross country skiing, but they aren’t ranked very high while still being at the level to compete at the World Cup or World Championship level.
  6. The IOC should relly should implement a pool of tripartite places to hand out to otherwise unqualified countries (in sports other than alpine and cross country skiing)
  7. The IOC is provisionally recognizing World Boxing: https://apnews.com/article/ioc-world-boxing-iba-2028-olympics-2c492c3388b77cabaf8d38dcefc1a6b0
  8. Definitively the best possible outcome from a sporting standpoint. No disrespect to Spain or South Africa but neither are baseball nations, unlike Taiwan and especially Nicaragua.
  9. Don't give Bach any ideas, only top 10 athletes in every events! Just imagine how great the Marathon, the road race and mass start cross countr races will be.
  10. I can understand having stricter standards where the universal quotas are very easy to achieve relatively speaking, but the Dutch NOC really takes it to a whole other level. The Olympics would be pretty terrible if every country had those policies.
  11. Happy Canmore is getting at least one World Cup stop, though having only one swing outside of Europe over the course of five years seems a *little* low.
  12. The fact that the New Zealand Olympic committee was waffling on sending him to Beijing is such a joke too. Lots of people there should be extremely ashamed of themselves.
  13. Real shame Wright isn’t competing for anymore, would be historic for Oceania to win a biathlon medal.
  14. Ya, fat chance the Canadian fans weren’t going to boo team Trump given the recent rhetoric coming out of our supposed ally.
  15. Oh ya, that must have been a completely devastating result for them. The Olympic medal / Asian games gold medal exemption is just about the only socially acceptable way to skip military service in South Korea, and by all accounts South Korean military service *sucks*.
  16. Cha Jun-hwan has won the men’s single in figure skating which means, importantly, military service exemption!
  17. Those are basically my thoughts as well. Ideally I’d like us to have the old combined back. But given the combined is probably dead and buried for good I prefer having the team combined rather than no combined at all.
  18. Ya. The team parallel event is… fun. I actually really enjoy watching it. Other than slalom it’s actually the alpine skiing event I enjoy watching the most. But it is *very* hard to take seriously.
  19. Oh ya, the team parallel event could really use a qualifying run. Unfortunately it’s an even lower prestige event than the combined was so I doubt the FIS wants to make it more demanding on skiers than it absolutely needs to be - they struggled to get big names to compete *at the Olympics*
  20. Unfortunately the combined was dying for years at this point. It’s basically not on the World Cup anymore, and since there are so few true overall skiers anymore (esp on the men’s side). This is actually a case where I think it would have stayed the same if it was just the women, but the last few top level men’s combined were just really bad. This is basically just a way for the FIS to save the event, because they were seemingly at a loss to maie the event work after trying a bunch of different formats.
  21. Wouldn’t be seeded lower than due to being the replacement team (as in the men’s tournament)?
  22. Ya, and to think in 2018 it was a 30 person team…
  23. The FIS will start hosting a mixed team dual mogul event soon.
  24. On the one hand, it’s kinda bs because duals is just moguls in a slightly different format. On the other hand IDGAF because I love moguls and I want more than one mogul event at the Olympics!
  25. Yes (with the caveat that you'd need to change how you time the start of a run), but when looking at a 0.001s difference in a ski race you're just doing a coin flip anyway. In general I think less significant figure in timing is better, because it ensures you're only measuring the actual performance and not stastical noise - if I had my way timing would not go above 10th of a second for endurance sports (heck I'm fine with just looking at seconds), 100th of a second for shorter time trials (like alpine skiing or speed skating) and 1000th of a second for head to head racing. I took a physics class in university about error analysis (basically accounting for the limits of the accuracy of your instruments in scientific experiments) and it really radicalized me in my view that some sports are timed to a degree of "precision" that doesn't make sense.
