Last night, I had the privilege to see my first live curling matches. The USA National Championships were just 1.5 hours away from where I live (not bad in a country the size of ours, and even more surprising since I live in an area where it rarely snows). I got to visit the 'page final' (i.e. first playoff round), the highlight of which for me was Team Shuster vs. Team Stopera. Team Stopera ended up winning by 1 point, but Shuster will be able to play one final match this morning to see if they can make it to the finals this afternoon (the winner of which will qualify to Worlds). None of the current Olympians were there, having declined their spot in the tournament. Got some free swag These people would yell 'Peel! Peel! Peel' whever someone would peel a stone. Got to see the measuring instrument in action. And yes, Matt Hamilton and Colin Hufman had sleeveless jerseys on.7 points -

Some outstanding performances in Day 1 and 2 of the national indoor championships: Women's 60mH: Mariam Abdul-Rashid delivers a championship record in the Women’s 60mH (8.03), rising to the occasion and shining bright on home soil in front of the Canadian crowd. Men's 60m: In a thrilling final, Eliezer Adjibi surges at the line to claim the national title, stopping the clock at 6.64 to set a new Championship record. Women's Shot Put: Sarah Mitton with a 19.97m Championship record secures the national title, now focused on chasing the three-peat at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. In 1st day of Men’s Heptathlon at the 2026 Canadian Indoor Championships: Damian Warner leads the standings with 3,429 points. Pierce LePage sits in second with 3,286 points. Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Early Qualification Predictions for your Nation
Topicmaster1010 and 2 others reacted to Josh for a topic
My extremely optimistic prediction for Canada, we'll get a big increase but I'm almost surely going to be all wrong because nothing ever seems to go right for us, there's always so many disappointments.... @intoronto @orangeman @NearPup @Topicmaster1010 @JoshMartini007 @Safe Dragonfly feel free to share any thoughts/anything that needs adding (if the numbers in rowing/shooting should be higher lower/disciplines should be different), and if I've made mistakes then corrections are welcome. Aquatics Artistic Swimming: 2, can't be optimistic about everything. Diving: 7. Three of Cullen/Wiens/Tessier in M 10m (I think at this stage leaving one behind would be a mistake...), Two of Jasmin/Erlam/Vallee/Palkhivala in W 3m, Miller in W 10m and Two of Zsombor-Murray/Paul/Fofana/Ciprick in M 3 (leaning towards the first two) Open Water Swimming: 2. One male, one female. Emma Finlin and Eric Brown. Swimming: 31. With the stroke 50s being added, slight increase from Paris. Waterpolo: 26. Women's team, for sure, given the extra quotas. Men's team will be battling Brazil for the Pan American Games quota, far from a given but I think it can happen (hmmmm, probably won't though) Archery: 2. One male, one female. Eric Peters is the frontrunner for the men, and Stephanie Barrett for the women (Esebua/Chenier/Brug/Hawash are also in the mix), but the men's team also has a small chance (with Deevang Gupta and one of Crispin Duenas/Reece Wilson-Potyon) maybe. Athletics: I know we had 48 in Paris but hear me out... 62 59. Boosted by some young talent coming through the pipelines and I think and hope the men's 4x400m relay can qualify. Badminton: 6. Victor Lai in men's singles, Michelle Li in women's singles, Lai/Yakura in men's doubles, Choi/Wu in women's doubles. No Lindeman/Wu in mixed doubles. Baseball/Softball: 15. Qualification in softball. Basketball: 28 again. Men's team is stacked with NBA talent and should qualify through the World Cup or the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, although with what happened in Tokyo we'll see. Women's team almost fucked up their qualification at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament last time, hopefully that won't happen again. Women's 3x3 team should qualify, Paige Crozon/Katherine Plouffe/Saicha Grant-Allen are probably locks and the last spot will be between Bosch/Brown. Boxing: 4. Tammara Thibeault is focusing on pro boxing at the moment, but has stated she wants redemption in LA 2028 in 75kg. Unfortunately, Viktoria Penney who's a promising youngster on our team, currently competes in 80kg and will probably drop down a weight-class because cutting down 10kg is a nightmare which means only one of them will be able to compete. Keoma Ali-Ahmadieh has shown some strong form at the World Championships last year, Joshua Orfi did as well. Bryan Coldwell also has a chance. With Scarlett Delgado, Mackenzie Wright, and Marie Al-Ahmadieh continuing, all of which barely missed out on quotas last squad, our women's squad will be hungry. Canoeing: 15. Katie Vincent, and two of Sloan MacKenzie/Sophia Jensen/Zoe Wojtyk in women's canoeing. Full squad in kayaking, and Fitzpatrick in men's canoeing. Alex Baldoni and Daniel Parry in the men's canoe slalom events (Parry is a promising youngster, may be too soon though), and one of Lea Baldoni/Lois Betteridge in the women's canoe slalom events. Cricket: 0. Nope, no chance. Our men might have a chance if it was 12 teams, but 6 absolutely not. Cycling: 24. In BMX freestyle, 1-2 of Mike Varga/Maxime Chalifoux/Jeffrey Whaley in the men's event. In BMX racing, Molly Simpson in the women's event for sure, and while Lucas Zhou is in contention for the men, along with Ryan Tougas I think both will miss out. Cole Punchard and one of Gunnar Holmgren/Carter Woods/Tyler Orschel in men's mountain biking, and Jennifer Jackson and one of Isabella/Ava Holmgren/Emily Johnson/Ella MacPhee/Rafaelle Carrier in women's mountain biking. Alison Jackson and one of Magdalene Vallires Mill/Olivia Baril/Sarah Van Dam in women's road race, Hugo Houle and Derek Gee in men's road race. Nick Wammes in men's sprint/keirin, Sarah Orban, Kelsey Mitchell and Lauriane Genest in women's team sprint, teams in women's and men's pursuit. No qualification in men's team sprint this time around. Equestrian: Full team of 9 athletes Fencing: 14. Team in women's foil, women's epee (if US can finish top 4), men's sabre (same with previous), men's foil, one of Nicolas Zhang/Fynn Fafard/Leon Xiao/Dylan French in men's epee, and Pamela Brind'Amour in women's sabre if she hasn't retired yet. Field Hockey: 16. Based off the qualification system, I'll say yes. Women are in a rebuild, so probably won't finish ahead of all of Uruguay/Chile/Mexico, however for the men I think there's a decent chance if we can make it to the bronze medal match against probably Chile, but it'll be a battle. Flag Football: 10. Tossup with only 6 teams per gender, but I'll say the women's team qualifies. Football: 18. Women's team. Men's team has a very small chance, depending on the qualifying event roster, but don't see it at all. Golf: 4. Two per gender, as is typical. Brooke Henderson and one of Anna Huang/Alena Sharp/Maude Aimee Leblanc/Aphrodite Deng for the women, a combination of Corey Connors, Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, MacKenzie Hughes for the men. Gymnastics: 12. Men's and women's teams in artistic gymnastics both qualify, men's is less sure though. It'll be between Felix Dolci, Ioannis Chronopoulos, Zachary Clay, Jayson Ramperstad, Chris Kaji, William Emmard, René Cournoyer, Aiden Li, Samuel Zakutney for the men's spots. Ellie Black, Lia Monica Fontaine, Aurelie Tran, Sydney Turner, Laurie Denoumee, Ava Stewart, Gabrielle Black, Denelle Pendrick, Rose Woo, Cassie Lee, and Ana Padurariu/Shallon Olsen (could be retired in some form, either overall or NT) for the women's spots. Sophiane Methot should qualify in trampoline for the women (Milette has no chance with the qualification system, unfortunately), and one of Remi Aubin/Gavin Dodd/Keegan Soehn/Etienne Cloutier for the men. Handball: Judo: 7. One of Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard or Jessica Klimkait in women's 63kg (right now I trust the former more, Klimkait has only switched weight classes recently though so I hope she can succeed in the transition and it'll be a tight internal battle), Christa Deguchi in women's 57kg, Evelyn Beaton in women's 52kg, and Coralie Godbout in women's 78kg (20th and 21st in the rankings, somewhat surprising), Francois Gauthier Drapeau in men's 81kg, Kyle Reyes in men's 100kg, Arthur Margelidon in men's 73kg (hasn't competed since Paris, if he's not in form maybe Justin Lemire), and I have Julien Frascadore in men's 66kg missing out. Lacrosse: 24. Men's and women's teams qualify, anything else will be unacceptable (something would have to seriously go wrong but... until it happens) Modern Pentathlon: Ermmmmmmm (Unless the new format favours a Canadian? Maybe Schultz? No idea) Rowing: Hopefully 25? Katie Clark in women’s single sculls, women's eights, men's eights, women's quadruple sculls, men's double sculls etc. No idea if we have any chance in costal rowing? I assume Pidgen is our best chance @phelps Rugby Sevens: 24. Women's and men's teams both qualify, with the US getting host quotas it makes getting the North American quota a lot easier. Sailing: 7. Antonia and Georgia Lewin-Lafrance in 49er FX, Madeline Gillis/Galen Richardson in nacra 17, Arie Moffat/Will Jones in 49er, and one of Ryan Anderson/James Juhasz/Carlos Charbati in ICLA 7 (last is young, so he might not even be competing in it by 2027) Shooting: 1-?. Madeline Boyd in women's skeet. Alex Wong in men's skeet? Shannon Westlake? Ty Ikeda? Skateboarding: 4. Unless Reece Nelson switches from vert to park in the next year, which I doubt it, only Fay Ebert in park, even though Evie Pritchard/Olivia Jiang also have chances. Three of Cordano Russell, Ryan Decenzo, Matt Berger, Micky Papa, Christopher Setinas in men's street. Sport Climbing: 1. Madison Richardson in women's boulder. Think the Bautrand's and Pitcher in men's speed will miss out. Probably too soon for Kelley in boulder, Le/Villeneuve in speed. Squash: 1. Hollie Naughton in the women's event. Baillargeon has fallen down the rankings and probably won't qualify. Surfing: 3. Erin Brooks hopefully (she should've competed in Tahiti...) and one of Sanoa/Mathea Olin in the women's event, Cody Young in the men's event. Levi Young and Wheeler Hasburgh miss out. Taekwondo: 3. Skylar Park in women's 57kg, one of Leonarda Andric (women's 67kg) or Josipa Kafadar (women's 49kg), and one of Nicholas Hoefling/Braven Park (men's 58kg), Tae-Ku Park (men's 68kg) for the men. Ella Brewster has to do better than Park if she wants to qualify, I don't see it happening. Table Tennis: 2. We have chances to qualify both teams, but nah. I think it'll just be Edward Ly in men's singles and Mo Zhang in women's singles. Triathlon: 4. 2 per gender, as usual. Tyler Mislawchuk and Charles Paquet for the men, One of Dominika Jamnicky/Sophia Howell/Desirae Ridenour and Emy Legault for the women. Tennis: 8. FAA, Shapo, Diallo in men's singles. Mboko, Fernandez, Andresscu, Marino in women's singles. Dabrowski in doubles. Volleyball: 4. Both teams could qualify, and neither team could qualify. Just so I have as little expectations as possible, I'll say neither. Humana-Parades/Wilkerson should qualify in women’s beach volleyball, I’m really confused on what the pairing situation is like so I’ll say we won’t qualify a second female team (and Belanger/Monkhouse are a tossup), but I think Schachter/Pickett can qualify in men’s beach volleyball through the NORCECA event. Weightlifting: 2 again. Maude Charron in women's 59kg, and Etta Love in women's 81kg+. Alex Bellemare comes up just short in men's 85/95kg, TBD weight-class. Wrestling: 6. Not sure if he has citizenship yet, but Peiman Biabani in men's 65kg freestyle (unfortunate for MacNeil) and Amar Dhesi in men's 125kg freestyle for the men. Alex Moore (men's 86kg freestyle) misses out). For the women, Ana Godinez (women's 62kg), one of Karla Godinez/Hannah Taylor (women's 57kg), Olivia Di Bacco (women's 68kg), Serena Di Benedetto (women's 53kg) Rundown Artistic Swimming: 2-8 Diving: 6-8 hopefully Open Water Swimming: 1-2 Swimming: 26-32 Waterpolo: 13-26 Archery: 2-4 Athletics: 50-62 Badminton: 4-8, singles and at least one doubles Baseball/Softball: 15 Basketball: 16-28 (because of the unpredictability of the men and disaster with the women, even though both should qualify) Boxing: 2-6 Canoeing: 10-15, one of the K4's (probably the men if I had to guess) might miss out Cricket: 0 and 0 Cycling: 15-24 Equestrian: 9 Fencing: 7-14 Field Hockey: 0-16 Flag Football: 0-20 Football: 18-36 Golf: 4 Gymnastics: 6-12 Judo: 5-8 Lacrosse: 24 Modern Pentathlon: 0 again Rowing: 13-29, right now Rugby Sevens: 24 Sailing: 2-8, 49erFX then the rest are tossups along with Bugeja in kite Shooting: 1-3, as usual Skateboarding: 4 Sport Climbing: 0-1, maybe more if the US weren't able to get a second quota at Pan Ams but they are Squash: 1-2, I see Baillargeon is still competing maybe he can surprise Surfing: 1-3 Taekwondo: 1-3 Table Tennis: 2-6 Triathlon: 4 Tennis: 5-8 Volleyball: 2-30, I expect the number to be higher than that, whether it's qualifying a team or two in indoor, or a men's quota/second women's quota in beach volleyball I'm not sure Weightlifting: 1-3, more likely 1. Wrestling: 4-6, three in women's wrestling and one of the men above at least. 12 teams, breaking our single games record of 9 set in 1976 at home in Montreal, and 437 athletes our highest total ever by a mile.3 points -

Meant to ask this during the Olympics, but how many of you non-USA peeps are familiar with this song? In case you don't know, this was written for the LA84 games by John Williams, renowned film score composer (Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park, etc.). NBC now uses this all the time in their Olympic promos, intros, etc. I had a friend who moved from the US to England, and when the Olympics came on, he commented that he missed this song. So, perhaps this song is unknown to non-USers...but I have a sneaky suspicion that you Olympics nerds might have heard it. Another one NBC uses (though I just learned myself that this was originally by French-American Leo Arnaud, called Bugler's Dream, dating back to the 1964 Tokyo games...apparently in 1996, John Williams combined it with Olympic Fanfare): The combined version: Edit: I'm hoping to make it to an athletics session at LA28 so I can be in the stadium where he directed the orchestra to perform this song during the Opening Ceremony. Williams is still alive, and at 94, I hope he can hang in there two more years to see the Olympics return to LA and receive some honor. He also composed music for Atlanta '96, and the opening theme of Summon the Heroes also gets used by NBC a lot:3 points -

The disappointments still outweigh the positives, by a mile actually but well…(someone should make a thread for that?) For Canada, in no specific order; A lot of these are similar to @Topicmaster1010's, but the same moments are standing out to me, there's also one that I'm not ready to mention yet because even though I'm proud of him, at the same time I'm still very disappointed about it. - Rachel Homan finally winning an Olympic medal after receiving a lot of hate after Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022 for not making the playoffs in either, she deserves this more than anyone. Also her triple takeout in the 8th against Sweden - Entire cross country skiing team, no words to describe their performance, except saying they're easily the Canadian team of the Olympics and my expectations were blew out of the water. - Piper Gilles/Paul Porier winning an Olympic medal in ice dance, three years ago, Gilles had a cancer diagnosis which put her dreams in jeopardy. Also very special given how many times they've been screwed over by judges this season. - One of the greatest to ever do it in freestyle skiing, Mikael Kingsbury, winning gold in the Olympic debut of dual moguls in likely his last event at an Olympic Games. - "Sparky" Mark McMorris, coming back from that nasty hard crash during big air training, to not only compete in slopestyle, but finish third in qualifications and land a run in the final to finish 8th. - Brad Jacobs winning gold in men's curling as a big "fuck you" to everyone who has been accusing him of cheating online (I still like Edin but still), mostly people who don't understand curling ofc - Kelsey Mitchell fulfilling her dreams of becoming a dual summer-winter Olympian finishing 13th in 2-women bobsleigh, after only 8 months of competing in this sport. Insane! - Stephen Gogolev finishing 5th in the men's figure skating event, thought top 10-15 would've been what could realistically be expected. - Megan Oldham winning her first Olympic medal with a bronze in slopestyle, then later on winning a gold in big air, after finishing 4th in big air in Beijing. - Deanna Stellato-Dudek becoming an Olympian after hitting her head during a training accident, which had her and Maxime Deschamps miss the figure skating team event. - Valerie Maltais winning three Olympic medals in speed skating at 35, team pursuit gold, and 1500m/3000m bronze. At most you could've hoped for 2, one of the 3000m/mass start and the team pursuit. Her winning a medal in the 1500m, can't have imagined it beyond my wildest dreams, it was her first international podium in this event. It's also likely her last Olympics. - Brendan Mackay coming up clutch on his last run to win an unexpected bronze in halfpipe as he didn't compete much this season, that being said he did win an event this season. - Laurent Dubreuil's surprise medal in the 500m in speed skating - Courtney Sarault winning four medals, most medals by a Canadian at a Winter Olympics since Klassen in 2006, even though I choose to try and forget about short track. Then International Athletes, in no specific order; Johan-Olav Botn pointing to the heavens to honour Sivert-Guttorm Bakken Benny Karl winning back-to-back golds in parallel giant slalom, ofc Totallympian @brunamoura's Olympic debut (we are all so proud of you) Men's freestyle skiing big air final, we were blessed with some insane tricks from the boys I don’t know if I’ll be able to witness that high of a level in a competition in the next few decades AJ Ginnis' farewell run, because it meant him becoming an Olympian Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo creating history as the first athlete to win 6 Olympic golds in a single games One of the greatest alpine skiers of all time, Federica Brignone, winning her long awaited Olympic gold, and a few days later winning another one, the more special one to me was the super-G though Kacper Tomasiak becoming one of the breakout stars of the games with 3 medals female biathlon team Von Allmen with an incredible Olympic debut, with 3 golds Nazgul, the dog, crossing the finish line during women's team sprint qualifications Suvi Minkinnen and especially Teresa Vobronikova winning bronze medals in biathlon winning three medals in ski mountaineering, and especially Oriol Cardona Coll with the gold More on ski mountaineering, Marianne Fatton winning gold in the women's event, she seems like a nice person and a great ambassador for the sport. Mikhail Shaidorov upsetting Malinin to win gold in men's figure skating Sturla Holm Lægrid admitting to cheating on his girlfriend publicly in an interview (kidding) Nadja Käelin coming from out of nowhere, and having an incredible Olympics Hassleborg and Isabella/Rasmus Wråna winning double gold for Sweden in curling, continuing their legacy in this sport, very happy for all of them as they are all some of my favourite curlers. Tirinzoni winning an Olympic medal in what is likely to be her last Olympics after seeing how dominant she's been ever since the 2018-19 season, same with Pätz if she does hang up her broom. Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara's WR in the pairs free skate Viktor Thorup medal in the mass start, even though the race was boring Eileen Gu winning gold in halfpipe, after her grandmother passed away the very same day. She didn't know about it until after the event, but I think to me with how she performed, her grandmother seemed to be giving her that extra bit of strength from above. Medal for Henry Sildaru in halfpipe, and not only a final but a top 8 for Benjamin Lynch Elina Ieva Bota winning a medal in women's singles luge Finland’s success in nordic combined with 3 medals, Eero Hirvonen and Ilkka Herola A few curling shots that stood out, Mouat's run quadruple in the 7th end against Switzerland in the semifinals, Muskatewitz's quadruple runback double in the 1st end against China and his spinner in the 5th end against Czechia (definitely a few that I'm missing) Just seeing how happy everyone was every time one of their athletes either medaled, or did better than expectations, definitely was one of them.3 points

So, wanted to update on this now that I’m back home in Seattle to say I had a really good time in Milan. I ended up not going to events outside of Milan (I went to short track, speed skating and hockey), and it was probably a good decision to keep things simple for my first Olympics. Getting around in Milan was a breeze, and I feel things were pretty well organized at the venues (though the ice hockey venue definitively could have used a couple more weeks of work). I was especially pleased with the speed skating venue, given it’s a temporary track it looked really good once you were actually in your seat and things were well organized for spectators (even though it was a looooong walk to and from the train station). So ya, happy with the experience, as a newbie to both attending the Olympics and traveling in Europe. Def made me want to attend the French Alps in 2030 (and subject them to my horrible-for-a-native French accent xD ) Thanks to for being good hosts. As an aside, I now understand why people dislike British Airways, and Condor was surprisingly okay, though it was definitively a "you get what you paid for" situation (flew SEA-LHR to get to Europe and FRA-SEA on the way back). Edit: oh, and big shout-out to the volunteers who were universally lovely.3 points

I think we have a chance in Recurve for a single male quota, and in mixed compound, Realistic one quota Athletics (8) : difficult as many things will change in the next 2-3 seasons, but let's. say 8, I think that could be a realistic number Badminton (1) : hopefully our Indonesian import will manage to qualify Basketball (0): small chances in both male and 3x3 male teams , but somehow I doubt it Boxing (2): two male quotas Canoe slalom (1). maybe with a small chance for two places, but one is realistic Canoe sprint (1): similar to slalom, maybe two, but one is realistic, but lets see how the new qualification system plays out Cycling (2): would bee very happy with a quota in BMX freestyle and male road race Diving (1): hoping that Matej Nevescanin will qualify Fencing (0): very small chance in mens foil, but I guess will not happen. football (0): there is always talks about our male team, but never succeeded, I am afraid will be the same for LA 2028 Artistic gymnastics (4): Kovtun plus two additional male quotes plus one female Handball (14): the mens team should qualify Judo (5): four female quota plus one male Rowing (5). difficult to say as boats/crews are not defined yet. But I expect 4 mens places plus 1 female. Maybe more, but let see Sailing (6): somehow not a good development in this sports, could be even less than 6 quotas. Shooting (5): hopefully two trap and two male rifle quotas plus one surprise Swimming (6): will be brave here and say 5 male plus one female. I think we have a realistic chance to qualify a freestyle relay. Table tennis (5): hope for 3 male and two female quotas incl. mixed doubles (Arapovic/Ban) Tennis (6): still too early, and always the question who is really interested in playing. Taekwondo (3): I am seeing two females plus one male qualifying Waterpolo (11): mens team should be safe, small chance for our women's team. Wrestling (1) considering the Russian expansion, one quota would be great in all other sports hopeless case for Croatia. But 88 would be a great delegation, probably too optimistic2 points -

Just a reminder, the World Baseball Classic starts in a few days (March 5-17) and is the only qualification event for the Americas, the two best nations from the Americas qualify. Results Here For Canada, there's a very very small chance of qualifying if the guys can have the tournament of their life. Mexico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico are the main favourites though.2 points -
Seems a bit stupid to cancel them. If you can't go, then the tournament continues without you, just like it would in other cases. Realistically how many teams won't be able to go to Italy or Greece?2 points

I don't know where the correct place to post this news is, but the Alexandri sisters announced yesterday they will leave and start competing for again Our aquatics federation and Olympic committee were in talks with them for a while apparently, and they say they want to end their careers where they started and represent Greece in Los Angeles. For those that don't know, they left Greece in 2012 for Austria at the age of 15 because they were cut from our national teams. It was their only way to continue in the sport despite not having any prior connections to Austria. They competed in Rio, Tokyo, and Paris where they placed 4th in the duet (our Greek duet finished 6th). They won many World and European medals for Austria and improved year after year and unexpectedly ended up surpassing all of the Greek girls that were previously seen as more promising by our federation and originally replaced them in our national teams. The girls thanked Austria for the support and opportunities and Austria also seems very supportive of their decision to go back to Greece.2 points

The Men and Women went 1-0 each today. So both teams still perfect. Hopefully that should in theory avoid relegation.2 points -
Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times. -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary. -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m. -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise. -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess. -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game. -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately. -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch. -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time. -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).2 points

2026 Winter Olympics - Day 16 (February 22)

I’d definitely add figure skating to the mix. Beyond Gogolev, we have incredible depth coming up. Lia Cho (13) is arguably the best young female skater in the world right now, and Quinn Startek (14) is another huge talent that many people are already talking about. Minsol Kwan (17) Camilla Volkova (15) Viktoria Barahatkina (15) and Sandrine Blais (17) are also very promising. Grayson Long (17) is also being talked about a lot and is currently working with Brian Orser. In pairs, Lia Pereira is only 21, which means she still has a long career ahead with Trent if they stay together. But i think Ava Kemp (18) and Yohnatan Elizarov (23) will eventually take over as the next dominant pair. In ice dance, LaLa (25/26) seem poised to step into Piper and Paul’s shoes and potentially even exceed them. They could realistically challenge the young American duo and position themselves strongly heading into the French Alps, even with the French team expected to dominate on home ice. On top of that, we also have a very promising young dance team in Layla Veillon (19) and Alexander Brandys (20). So there is a lot to be excited about for the future of figure skating for Canada as well.2 points
