Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

@heywoodu Kuworge just lifted 411kg (his new PB) in total to beat two Iranian weightlifters for the gold in world juniors :d

with that result he will take that Israeli weightlifter. he will be in 24th position and with a bit of luck he will qualify for the Olympics. I believe he has a good chance.

Wow :yikes:

When will we know?

And now I hope there's not some internal limit which would restrict him..

Dutch NOC makes it difficult, as per usual. For 'layer 1' of the international qualifying pathway, there are no additional requirements. For layer 2, there is an additional requirement of having to lift at least equal the total weight of the 8th placed competitor at the 2019 world championships (424kg in this case).

The question is, what exactly is layer 1, what is layer 2, and in which layer would he qualify?

we will have the final list in 2 weeks apparently but we will probably have a better idea when IWF publishes the updated list (after removing ineligible weightlifters) on 3 or 4 June.

This is the ranking if we remove "obvious" ineligible weightlifters.

if all those weightlifters expected to not participate doesn't get selected, CZE and HUN will be in top 8 and Kuworge will take the European quota. but even if none of this happens. he still has a good chance to take the re-allocated African quota.

this will be stupid to deny him a chance. he is the World Junior Champion with a brilliant future.

:GEO

:ARM good chance not be selected

:BLR good chance not be selected

:IRI

:BRA

:SYR

:TKM

:ALG

-----------------------------------TOP8

:RUS Won't be selected 99%

:AUT 109kg weightlifter but has a chance to play dirty and qualify here

:CZE

:KOR won't be selected most probably

:JPN won't be selected most probably

:HUN

:USA

:NED

Anyone with an updated list of suspended countries in weightlifting for the Tokyo Olympics and NOCs with limited quota? Is the one in wikipedia correct?

@MHSN How many Brazilians will qualify? 3?

I believe it will be between 2 and 4. +109 is guaranteed. very good chance for women's 49kg and 87kg. also slim chance for men's 96kg.

    • Spalletti is a much better coach than Gattuso, but what did his team show at the Euro against Switzerland, or in Oslo against Norway? Nothing... I'm afraid that even Guardiola and Klopp wouldn't help here- well, maybe they could somehow push Bosnia through, but what next?
    • Denmark can only blame themselves for that Belarus match. A win and they'd qualify with a game to spare alas...   Gattuso has no business being a manager at this level. Italian problems come from the lack of domestic talent in Serie A but Gattuso ain't gonna fix anything.
    • Just listening to Gattuso is enough to understand that he's a simpleton.  Honor, pride, grit...but he is a coach, not a Spartan soldier. And he was surrounded by other idiots who confessed they had to buy their high school diploma. 1-0 up but down to 10 men and they are playing only counters with a lone forward with good pace (Kean, who almost scored the second) and Gattuso replaces him with a target man. Then 1-1, the team is forced to play more possession and the first thing he does is taking out a ball playing midfielder (who served a near assist just moments before) for Frattesi, who is only good in running into empty spaces to finish but always shy away from playing the ball.

    • The last time this team played well was at Euro 2021 under Mancini, but they 8 months later they lost to Macedonia at home in a 2022 World Cup qualifier play- off at home game... In my opinion, Italy Euro success was thanks to Chiellini and Bonucci's recent big form and Chiesa's tournament of a life. Without them, Italy is simply average team: the 1-4 and 0-3 group defeats to Norway wasn`t a case (under Spalletti, so a good manager, at all). Play-offs, however, are always a lottery in this format – especially when you're playing decisive matches away and also under the pressure of Italy now + Bastoni's red card episode. Such things are decisive. Take the current play-offs: Poland, Denmark and Italy could just as easily have advanced, instead of the Czech Republic, Sweden or Bosnia. Top teams simply don't have to play in these play-offs, why they avoiding the risk of defeat. In groups you have 7-8 home and away matches and no only one- last match chance away
