Swimming Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

Interesting how women's 1500m freestyle is the event with most qualified athletes so far. Probably because FINA based the entry times on results before this was an Olympic event, which doesn't make much sense.

I mean, even San Marino is not too far from qualifying in this event.

I imagine they'll make an adjustment after the world champs if too many athletes qualify.

Germany has also a qualified athlete in the 400 free (Florian Wellbrock), the 200 fly (David Thomasberger) and the 400 IM (Philip Heintz), but i don't know why you have 2 qualified athletes for Germany in the 100 fly? I think only Marius Kusch achieved the standard so far.

On the women's side Germany has 2 qualified athletes in the 800 free (Sarah Köhler and Leonie Beck), but as far as i know only Beck has achieved the standard in the 400 free.

In the 100 back Germany also has an athlete with the standard (Laura Riedemann).

I checked for 400 m man, I had that in the data but I missed to copy, I'll fix it immediately. I cannot find in my data the athletes you are talking about in men 200 fly and 400 IM, while regarding 100 fly men the two athletes I have written are Kusch and Heintz.

Talking about women' events, I have totally opposite data on 400m and 800m freestyle, with both of the athletes you mentioned having achieved A standard in 400m and Kohler having done it in 800m :wall: While I noted that Riedemann achieved a B standard in 100 back.

However, there are two possible explanations for this difference, in addition to the fact that I may have not noticed some relevant times in the events I checked: 1) I missed some events or I couldn't find data, so they are incomplete; 2) some of these standards were achieved out of the lists of events that I know FINA is recognizing as qualifying events, so I have never seen them

Men's 200 fly: David Thomasberger swam 1:56.01 in Bergen in April

Men's 400 IM: Philip Heintz swam 4:14.27 in Stockholm in April

Men's 100 fly: Philip Heintz swam 51.65 last year, but this year he hasn't been faster than 52.41

Women's 400 free: This year the fastest 2 german athletes are Leonie Beck (4:07.06) and Reva Foos (4:08.22), Köhler hasn't been faster than 4:09.07 this year, but last year she swam 4:05.74

Women's 800 free: Köhler swam 8:23.63 in Bergen and Beck swam 8:25.99 in Stockholm

Women's 100 back: Laura Riedemann swam 59.81 in Magdeburg (maybe this isn't an approved competition?)

    • Kristian Gkolomeev (swimming)   He specialised in the men's 50 freestyle, was 5th in both Tokyo and Paris, won a world silver in 2019 and many European medals including gold last year.   He went to the Olympics 4 times. He is still only 31 years old but hinted at Paris being the end for him so I guess it should not be surprising, though he is still in his top form and given how close he was to winning an Olympic medal the last two times, I was hoping he would try again in 2028...
    • People are judging her but the truth is she has no points to defend after Wimbledon. She only played the Olympics where she lost in the third round and got injured, then withdrew from the North American swing (including two 1000s) except she tried to play the US Open and retired in her first round match, then missed the rest of the season (another two 1000s plus Guadalajara which was her best tournament regardless of it being the WTA Finals, 1000, or 500 as it is now).   She could've extended her injury break to be exactly 6 months as many players do to get a protected ranking, but she came back and risked missing big tournaments and having to play qualifying possibly. If anything she should be applauded for that.   It looks like she'll have to play qualifying in Rome and possibly Wimbledon for example, which she wouldn't have had to do if she abused the protected ranking system as many others do.   EDIT-Also she was still in the top 10 during both the Olympics and the US Open, so people writing that her ranking was already dropping are incorrect!

The hurdles are a big flaw because 1 hurdle and 1 flat race is not a mixing of different categories and skills in the way the other events can be. 3000 and 5000m  be too similar   as well I think.    I don’t get why they started in Kingston. Anyone could tell it would struggle for attendance there more than in the USA.    Also I’m surprised Johnson invited Naser with her ban.

    • Just finished watching. Let's see if they manage to improve the format for next time, this was arguably the biggest flop I've seen in terms of athletics events....I don't mean the races themselves, the few events that were there were fine, but man this was mostly a waiting game. Glad HBO has it here, so it was easy to skip through the many, many, many minutes of nothing. This was sort of like an undressed Diamond League evening.   If they do this within one hour instead of two and also create a Grand Slam Field, who knows, it may become more interesting.
    • Not so big difference to the Diamond league, except DL has the field events to show during the breaks between races but DL also give the running to much tv time when if they at least have the field events. Maybe DL even more can focus on the field events now that GST has the running. also what is the point of putting together for example 400m and 400 hurdles in the same category🤔
    • I agree, it was a decent event, but nothing more than that.
