For a flagship event eights is doing horrible. I mean look at the boat list at the 2019 World Championships. I can't name an Olympic event with such low participation at the World Championship level.

if they were anything close to a "serious" institution, the IOC would have never included in the Olympic schedule that sh*t named Freestyle BMX, Skateboarding, Breakdance (from 2024), Trampolin Gymnastics or Surfing and they would also have already got rid of the absolutely not trustable Weightlifting and Boxing...:pope:

 

and suddenly here you have your 400+ quotas and 30+ events cut...:evil:

 

simple as it looks...

Personally I wouldn’t mind seeing Field Hockey, Diving, Golf, and Rowing kicked off the program, but it wouldn’t be wise. Just like how kicking the new sports off the program wouldn’t be wise.

I could understand why you want to get rid of field hockey and golf (even though I think both sports deserve to be at the Olympics). But, why do you want to kick diving and rowing? You are the first person I know that complains about Olympic rowing. :lol:

I'm fine with rowing in general, but coxed eights have very few nations competing and it has a lot of athlete quotas so I can see it being axed one day.

 

Yes I know the history and prestige of the event, but why should it be an Olympic event if no one is practicing it.

Because apparently we can just rant about kicking sports we don’t find particularly excising or worthy out of the Olympics :dunno:

 

I do actually like Rowing, I was just making a point there :yes

 

Tokyo 2020 could be the last time we see eights in the Olympics. That would be an easy way to cut quotas, and @JoshMartini007 made a good argument for it.

That is exactly the concern : earning  the Olympic qualification. SA players have not swim a single meter to earn it.

I am in favour of eliminating eights (and lightweight boats) to save a few quotas and introduce coastal rowing for example.

 

In Spain, our federation created an eight in 2014 with the best rowers we had at that moment (sacrificing a four that could have tried to qualify to Rio) and the distance with the rowing powerhouses was insane. Obviously, this boat was eliminated in 2016. I think it is impossible for the rest of the world to reduce the distance with bigger countries.

Yeah, as the time goes by, it more and more looks as though the bronze in men's eights from Sydney 2000 has been our biggest pound-for-pound Olympic success.

That would be sad. Do all those boats with 2 and 4 people and lighter people and whatnot have that much more meaning than the flagship of rowing?

      Well, we're just a few hours away from the start of this series, with the first stop being in my home city, on which the "boycott" was lifting afther the whole 2017 World Aquatics Championships cancellation some years ago. I'll be attending on Saturday and Sunday (finals days), and will try to share some pictures.   One of the novelties is that the qualification for the "stages" have suffered some modifications, with more athletes given a chance to start in both individual and synchro events (of course, they needed to obtain certain scores at designated competitions in the past months, including 2024 World Championships and 2024 Olympic Games).   The most significant change however, we'll be seen at the finals, in which there will be a head to head format, which you can read more here.

      Too bad to hear another case in which athletes are really ashamed and exploited by careless, insensitive bastards, to the point some of them quit the sport they love.   Some months ago I helped a former junior Mexican judo competitor to create his own school. One of the main points he wanted to add to the statutes of his association was the existence of a medical and welfare committee, which helped kids with potential abuse from coaches and that this could be replicated at the local level by other schools and the State's judo association. He told me in his own experience, this conducts are often tolerated and silenced by the national federations in order to get more public funding, which of course, is disgusting.

      I also experienced the same issues with other websites in the past 2 years (one was non the less than mlb.tv, which I could reach only behind an Italian vpn for months 2 years ago)   it came out that here it was connected to the fucking anti-piracy shield of the Italian government (despite I'm not using any pirate website, only free or paid official ones), with some providers having a lot of their subnet addresses completely blocked because of one signaled violation within their CDN   however, I don't think it's the same kind of issue in  of course   the only advice I can give, it's to try and connect under a vpn (even of your own Country, but still under a vpn)   normally this overcomes all kinds of blocks at any level, intentional or unintentional   and if a home broadband connection doesn't work, always try the data connection of your smartphone (if you have one) before starting to seriously worry
