She is a Canadian Boxer who won't go to Tokyo due to cancellation of qualifiers. She was on Maternity Leave during the tournaments that counted for rankings. So basically she was even denied of a opportunity to qualify for  Olympics

Isn't missing competitions one of the (in this case unfortunate) consequences of being pregnant? It sucks that qualifiers were then cancelled, but on what grounds does she think she should be there if she couldn't qualify through a qualifier and didn't compete in events that counted for rankings?

I agree. It's bad luck for her, but what about everyone who has been injured during the restrospectively crucial tournaments? Are they getting Olympic Wildcards as well?

What Qualifier? There was never a direct qualifier for boxing for Pan American nations

No I think for all other boxers in the world it's fine because they participated in 1 qualifier at least. But Pan Americans no.

I thought you said it was cancelled :d

Which means there was supposed to be one, and she couldn't qualify in that way. That sucks bad, but on what grounds does she expect to go to Tokyo anyway, despite not qualifying?

She doesn’t have a case. But her reasoning is that she was fit for the qualifying tournaments in March/April/May 2020 but with cancellation of all qualifying tournaments, qualification went to ranking. And the only tournaments in which she was eligible to participate for rankings were in the time frame when she was taking a break due to pregnancy. As many have pointed out, same argument can be made by a large number of athletes. Though, sad for her missing out even on a chance to qualify, the legal case is wrong. It is just using her pregnancy to get a free WC.

why Canadian government didn't offer hosting the Pan-American Qualification event instead of sending this letter now ?!

all American boxers deserve an equal chance to qualify for the Olympics. this shouldn't be based on that useless ranking which wasn't important at the time and I'm sure so many other boxers beside Bujold didn't take it seriously. they can't play the pregnant card though.

The IOC declared it was too late to move it

PR damage? Nobody knows about this outside Canada.

It's bad but she just had bad luck, like many others.

New York Times and other outlets have also picked up on it

That article was published over 10 days ago and there’s been no public outcry

I do have some sympathy for the boxer but it’s pretty clear most people won’t care. The IOC won’t want to set a precedent of offering wildcards for ‘injured’ or unavailable athletes and they’ll (rightly IMO) point to COVID as an extenuating circumstance for not being able to host a qualifier

Her argument is she was ranked high enough to qualify before she went to have a baby. She planned everything so that she could back and compete at the qualifier, and that has been taken away from here. I really do not see how the IOC can just grant her a spot like that, but it is what it is atp.

    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
