Archery Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

Only 16 pairs in the archery mixed team event.

This is idiotic. If I counted correctly, in Rio and London there were respectively 24 and 25 countries with at least one male and one female archer.

The countries that qualify a men's and/or women's team will have the advantage of keeping only the best score, so several nations with only 1 man and 1 woman won't enter an event created for nations with 1 man and 1 woman.

That is indeed interesting. Could understand it, if they didn't want byes, but considering that they already have such in the team contests that doesn't seem like the reason.

even at the World Championship, only top 16 make it to the knockout round (both for men/women team events and mixed team events). apparently there is a rule about not more than 16 teams

Well they are granted at least 4 spots, in the case that the same 12 teams obtain both male and female teams qualified. It is not that much, but if number of archers is limited to 64 per gender, there cannot be many more

so Asian Games in Jakarta will be an Olympic qualifier . that's interesting but most of top Asian nations will probably finish in top 8 at the worlds later in 2019 and will qualify a complete team.

so what if Korea wins the gold in Jakarta and later qualify a team ? the spot goes to the next best unqualified nation ? in this case we may see a 5th-6th placer from AG gets the spot. or even lower than that.

while Indonesia completely destroyed the Asian Games by even removing some Olympic events :wall::wall:, I wonder if other sports use the AG as Olympic qualifier.

Only the top 4 athletes will be eligible for the quota places. If you are unable to award someone the place will be reallocated to the Final Individual Qualification Tournament. So basically Asia will lose out.

So... NOC's can get individual quota through mixed tournament in the continental games HOWEVER that doesn't necessarily means that they will participate in the mixed tournament during the olympics?

If they get quotas in mixed tournament, they qualify one per gender, so they can compete in mixed team. To qualify for the draw, they must finish in top 16 in Olympic ranking round

More or less, though I guess you can consider the qualification round as part of the mixed team tournament. Overall this was done to make sure at least 16 NOCs have a male and female archer.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
